New OS is my biggest fear, lol. My dinosaur of a laptop still runs XP, which I'm perfectly happy with but I'm sure it's going to die on me any day now.
Windows 7 is pretty user-friendly, honestly. It's the polished, unfucked Operating System that Windows Vista wanted to be. Windows 8 is really cool...if you like the Xbox 360 Dashboard and everything being set up to be "touch friendly." On the bright side, if you buy something soon, it shouldn't be hard to get something with Windows 7 as long as you don't wait too long.
Check out outlet.lenovo.com. They have been having a "DOORBUSTERS" sale since the beginning of December. They are refurbished and scratch and dent but they are factory direct and come with the same warranty as a new one (1 year). They also have some new ones that are clearance. It's really hit and miss since they only list what is available at the time and the prices tend to fluctuate, but I picked up a B570 with WIN 7 Intel Pentium B960 with 4GB RAM for $213.00 a few weeks ago + free shipping. I've been using it ever since and I've had no problems, just a small scratch on the underside. I too did not want to get a new computer with Windows 8 and have been really happy with this one and for the price I'm not gonna complain.
I just got a new laptop and it came with windows 8 and I hate it. I would much rather run on XP. I have the hardest time navigating through 8. It's awful.
i'll second the asus recommendation, and also heartily endorse windows 7. been using it since it came out and i've never had a single shutdown or bluescreen or any issues due to the os. best operating system i've used except for windows server 2003. lenovo is also a good manufacturer, and i've liked some of the higher-end hp laptops as well. vaios tend to be overpriced for what you're getting, and dell to a lesser extent. avoid acer, it's like the modern day packard bell. newegg is pretty good for prices but i think it's absolutely essential for reviews. don't just go by the egg ratings, some people will vote a certain way because of some aspect of the machine you might not care about, so read the actual reviews, even if you just read the most negative ones. they're much more tech-savvy shoppers than you'll find on amazon.
Yeah, Hubby was just commenting that 7 is getting hard to get way faster than he's ever seen 0.o They really want those touch screens out I guess. (I totally want one though....hahaha)

Additionally, buy something that you feel comfortable with. I don't personally like laptops with giant displays because it makes them heavy and bulky, but I like something that feels sturdy enough that it could take a good bump and not have the display break. I also like things that are reasonably easy to disassemble or swap things out of. I've replaced the keyboard in my Asus 3 times because I have a 2 year old, and it's a matter of prying a little bit and getting some retaining clips past the case, sliding it out, and unhooking the cable. Gateway? 35 screws that are 3 or 4 different sizes and 2 and a half hours.
HP has decent laptops at affordable rates on their site, however, if you don't need something portable I'd advise you to make your own Pc. I did it over Christmas for myself for about 500 bucks and this baby is pretty damn powerful.

I dual turk when I can. My wife got on and really didn't get into it. So, when a decent hit comes up, I run my account in Chrome and hers in Firefox. But, since set masters is what I built my account up with, and they stopped showing up when she signed up, she is still at under 200 completed.
I have been using a Samsung Series 7 Slate which is a tablet PC for about a year and I like it. Pros= Fast start up and fast performance, Decently big bright clear screen, can't fit in your pocket but is still pretty thin. Cons=If your on a couch one hand holds the tablet while the other types or drag and click stuff, Price I paid about a thousand for it a year ago "amazon refurbished", It takes awhile to get use to a tablet experience. If you do buy one get the one with blue-tooth keyboard and dock. So glad I did because I can use it as a desktop.
