Casting words sucks?

I just took a look at the full edit for one of my many recent 8's.

One word that I marked as uncertain "[?]" has been replaced with a word that (to my ear) sounds completely different from the audio.

I suppose that the editor must've decided to simply replace the original word with a word that he or she liked better.

I'm beginning to realize (again) that I strongly prefer nearly-verbatim transcription. CW's style is clearly not my personal favorite style. (But yeah, that's just me.)

That is awesome. May your PPT approach 99 before too long! :)

Some folks just have what it takes! It's like in gaming or sports, I just don't have what it takes, but I salute those who do.

    (OT)
A few years ago I tackled a complex adventure game which involved several tricky puzzles which could take the average person days to complete. Being fairly terrible at puzzles, I would've spent weeks if I hadn't cheated and used a walkthrough! LOL! ... But there was one guy who said he was disappointed in the game, because it was far too easy for him -- he completed the game in a single afternoon (with no help and no use of walkthroughs or other reference material). This achievement seemed incredible, almost impossible to believe. And yet I believe him! Because I know it is true, the very best of us really do have what it takes. ;-)

I'm with you on this. I've tried both now multiple times and definitely enjoy typing what I'm hearing much more than having to constantly refer back to a style guide. Personal preference I guess.

I know this is the CW thread, but SpeechInk is mostly verbatim. It's insurance calls. I can't relate in terms of pay because of my setup and the lag, but to me it isn't worth doing them anymore. Being knocked down in grade "per character change" really makes me mad. I'm not exactly sure that's how it goes down, but from looking at the edits that seems to be the case.

So if, uh, you know, w-, well, you, um, see, get a really, uh, fast speaker and their comments are FULL of filler words -- I'm just screwed. Missing a false start can take me down 3 or 4 points.

... Yeah well uh, I uh, you know kind of I mean, mumble but, and then we, ah, er, eh, [xx] mmmmhhh. And then actually then again but no, but no, yes, no, yeah yeah, but then again that's kind of a good point because why for the simple reason due to the fact that sometimes they sort of, maybe kind of you know. So in other words is, or is to put it another way that is basically is what it boils down to is, is that that what but that it's what it is is [xx] mumble ...

    LMAO!

    Yup, that's my nightmare.

    From my transcript:
"Now I've got to get one of those."

    Edit:
"Now, I've got to get one of those."

Can't win with the commas.
If I'd put that one in, it probably would've been edited out.

I don't know the full context but putting that comma in completely changes the meaning of the phrase.

I did some SpeechInk work yesterday and got a 97 and a 98 for them. :)

    > "... completely changes the meaning of the phrase."

    Mm-hmm ... or does it? ;-)

In a similar construction, one could write:
"Tomorrow I've got to ..." (sans comma) or
"Tomorrow, I've got to ..." (with comma).

(Congrats on your high grades from SpeechInk!)

For my latest transcript, I tried to fix the things that I'd been doing wrong. I really took out the fillers. I adjusted my comma usage as best I could. I checked everything a dozen times.

    And boom, it's another 8.

For me, 9's are pure luck. Every 9 that I've got could just as well be an 8.

One or more of the 'problems' that cause me to get 8's most of the time, exist in every transcript I've done so far, and will exist in every transcript I ever do.

    LOL!

Since you qualify, why not try a few Improve a Transcript HITs? Pay isn't outstanding but if you can get 9s then maybe a switch will get flipped somewhere and 8s won't stay the norm.

    Just a thought.

Nope, I'm here to transcribe, not to edit. ~_o

The only things I like to edit are my own transcripts, and my forum posts. I don't much enjoy editing or grading others' work. I leave those jobs to those who wanna do 'em.

I've done better with editing than I have with transcribing. Much better. o_0 My editing score has already passed my PPT. I've edited about 10 transcripts. I've transcribed @ 150.

Dammit ALL to hell, lol!

I'm still threatening to start a thread on editing, but I'm afraid to jinx my progress. I'll wait to see if I can maintain my scores and raise my PPT before I post about that.

As always, good luck with CW everyone and happy turking. :)

Congrats on your good work! I hope it didn't sound as if I was diminishing the hard work of others. I'm not. I just don't understand the difference between when I turn in good work and someone else does.

When my transcript follows the style guide and has few or NO changes in the final edit, I get confused when I get 8s. That happens a lot. You don't seem to be having that problem, so again, congrats! You are lucky that your good transcripts are recognized as such. I'm just pointing out that I wish mine were as well. Some of mine HAVE deserved 8s, but many more have not.

Anyway, you should hit those expedited HITs in no time, so enjoy them and happy turking. :)

The name of the US city of St. Louis is typically spelled with the abbreviation "St."

However, unabbreviated "Saint" is also sometimes used.

Both forms can be found even in some city government documents, e.g.:

Regardless of whether I choose "St." or "Saint," some editor is sure to disagree.

I'm going with "St." but I'll expect to see "Saint" in the final edit. (Conversely, of course, if I had chosen "Saint" then I'd expect to see "St." in the final.)

I could write a note to defend my decision, but I'm not even going to bother.

    Anticipated grade: 8.

Hey InParentheses, what would you say to that, if I may ask? You're the expert on getting 9's all the time. ;-) Clue me in. Would you write "St. Louis" or would you write "Saint Louis"? (I ask out of mere curiosity. I'm not asking for help with my transcript; I have already submitted it.)
