@Markb I have a happy story (I'm sure you all get tired of my whining) The requester Stax/stdata sent me a $5 bonus for my tip about approving some of their hits and they reversed my rejection too!
My only thought is that the first article will chase people away leaving us with more HITs. But then the response is doing the opposite but I get it that it will help to get more requesters to use Mturk which in turn bring us more work hopefully.
I'm going with your first impression...that NY Times article had nothing to do with requesters. And why wouldn't a requester want good workers who are willing to work for less anyway? Hummm.
I think the NY Times article was about as predictable as it gets. Although to the writer's credit he did actually spend some time working. Usually they see penny hits, misinterpret the 60 minute timer as an estimate and trumpet "Amazon getting people to work for a penny an hour!" The article might deter the odd potential worker and bring in the odd crap requester who thinks "AWESOME, I can get my work done for 97 cents/hr!", but I doubt it will make much difference. The basic lesson is if you aren't using at a minimum scraper/forker/etc you have absolutely no chance. In a way the TV response pisses me off more. But then TV pisses me off in general. That graph showing turkers make $20/hr these days doesn't reflect my experience. At all. The whole thing is a bit ironic. They complain that the original article attracts a certain type of worker to do interviews (true enough) but TV itself attracts a certain kind of worker to review HITs. They complain about the original article being one-sided, but... yeah, you can finish that sentence. I honestly think TV does as much damage to workers in general as it helps. The whole environment seems to encourage blowing through surveys as fast as possible, bragging about your times, etc. Sometimes I look up a requester and see 20 people reviewing an outlier survey that paid $1 for a minute, but the requester's other surveys paying minimum wage only have a few reviews. Does wonders for their average. And I really hate accusing people of scamming, but if you finished what was for me a 15 minute survey in 1 minute 23 seconds then you didn't really do the survey. Basically I think the place encourages bad workers and gives requesters unrealistic information on how long their surveys take causing them to reduce pay. TV is not completely useless. If I see an average of $5/hr on TV I know there is no way in hell *I* can make money doing that HIT. Thus ends the wall of text. Going back into hiding.
