Hey, you guys, University of California @ Irvine is paying Turkers $20 for a 1-hour survey that will help improve TurkOpticon. "We will interview you in person, by email, or through an audio chat system – as you prefer. The interview will take approximately one hour." One payment choice is via Paypal, so clearly it's not an actual HIT, and since they're interviewing you, I imagine it won't happen, like, tomorrow. Details here. Please post anything else you find out about it. Obviously the site is legit, but I haven't contacted them myself. Just heard about it!
Thank you, I just signed up, and I will post when I get any more info on it. Oh, by the way I bought your book on transcription, and it was a big help to me as a beginner, thank you!
No problem, everyone---you're welcome. I hope this turns out to be a good experience for all who get to participate. riyazalikhan, I don't have any more info than you do, but it didn't say you had to be from a certain country. In fact, it said on that page that they were looking for a variety of participants, so I would think that means they are accepting Indian participants. I'll keep my fingers crossed for you and all our Indian Turkers. And bitler2000, I'm so happy that the book helped you! Sounds sappy, but I get a little warm fuzzy every time someone says so. So thanks for mentioning it.
Hi all - Lilly here from team turkopticon. The interview is specifically to understand how people use Turkopticon so you need to have been a user of the service to be selected. In the future, we'll be interested in studying Turkers more generally. (We're working on understanding more about what Turk working is like.) Are there any Turk related questions you wish social researchers would help figure out? We're interested in how our research can work towards needs and goals you all have. - Lilly
Bumping, because I just looked and apparently they're still recruiting at the site I linked to to start this thread. As Lilly said, you must be a TO user. Because they appear to be trying to select a cross-section of folks (various ages, countries, levels of use, etc.), it seems likely that this is not first-come, first-serve but that everyone who signs up has an equal chance of getting in. So it's probably not too late! Also, the message I got when I signed up (the day after I made this post) was that they'd be getting back to me in a few weeks. So this will not be something that you will do and get paid for immediately. Lilly: I'd love to know what the demographics are for TurkOpticon users, because it's be interesting to know how that compares to MTurk users overall. I realize that you might only be able to tell anything about that from your study signups, though, which would mean there would be no truly accurate way to get that info. But in particular, I'm curious as to why and how much others Turk. We occasionally ask that question around here, but if your cross-section ends up being pretty different than our forum population, it would be interesting new information.
I was contacted by them a couple days ago and have my interview set up for Thursday. They probably didn't do anything over Thanksgiving, but I would imagine that you guys will start seeing invites on Monday.
Yes, good luck to us all! It's great of you to share that you got some word, HappyFish. Really appreciate it.
