I often sign in, then after a certain period of time, I am automatically logged out. I Turk on and off, 15 minutes here, 15 minutes there.... So, while it may appear I am a lurker or nonmember, I really am a member

I have one hour to turk during my lunch hour. I am a member and I participate every now and then. I often log on, click to the latest comment and work backwards. Before the Daily page took hold, I started a daily page every day. I would put links to the survey and how much time it took me. I didn't care if anyone else posted on it, though some did. Some people are too new to know how it works or what to post. some people don't have enough time to look and really need it to maximize the time they have. Others post but duplicate what's already there. If everyone posted, there would be a ton of duplicate, triplicates or half information.

Wow that's a pretty good split on the poll. I wonder if the no's consider themselves democrats or republicans, and then if they consider themselves strong democrats or republicans.... Seriously though I started out as an unregistered lurker, saw the occasional post that said hey why not join? So I did now I guess I consider myself a registered lurker, and basically because I'm not as efficient as some, and they post before I can get to the HIT and post it.

Truly though if you want to build the forum you want to allow the lurking, eventually a portion of them will register, when they feel comfortable, and eventually will contribute which is what you want I am imagining.

Truthfully I would rather have the lurkers than the trolls which occasionally show up, and the community here is a good collection, I've run across posters that I look forward to seeing their posts (sasquatch, l1n7, boardwalkumpire, granit, no name but a few) and that have reached out and helped above and beyond what you would normally expect (naturegirl) and these are the type of community that will bring in the lurkers to become members.

I logged in to vote 'No' to make those bars equal, but now there is 2 vote difference so I abstain. :(

Indeed. I am a chronic lurker for example. I lurked for years before I registered.

I am not going to tell you, but I can assure you that anyone who disagrees with me is an un-American moron and deserves to be defriended on Facebook immediately. ;)

I can't add anything that hasn't been said. The hits are going to go whether they are listed here or not. People who don't come here are going to find them and do them. They wait as do you. This list nor any other has a corner on that. Yes, this list is great. It helps find things that would take a long time to find on my own. Sometimes. Other times I am just wasting my time running thru the assortment here and do better doing my own searching. HowEver, If I Find a good it, I try to bring it back here and maybe no one else has listed it and others can benefit. And I love that "thanks" button that was added. So many times I've wanted to thank folks for hits and just didn't want to take up time and bandwidth. I love that thing.

Has anyone read Lord of the Flies?

That's what this thread reminds me of.

Just click the "Remember Me" button right below where you put in your login information and you will stay logged in until you die, or your computer is stolen.

I voted no and typed a long reply yesterday then it got eaten and I got busy away from the computer for the rest of the day. So I'll just steel rek's post since it's basically what I said. I know I don't post HITs as often as I used to, mainly because by the time I find anything it's been posted and usually more than once. I'm not a risk taker like a lot so most of my HITs are always the same shit every day, SpeechInk, CrowdSource, blah blah. Anyways, there's my .02 worth.

I would love to see that HIT posting script also feed to a separate thread that contained HITs only and was only writable by the script (and Andy). That would provide a clean, HITs-only thread for those of us who just want to work and then the current Great HITs thread could be left alone to the chaff that pervades it.

There are other websites then just this one. You just enter the id of the hit and it will email you as soon as it posts to mturk. The greatest hit section is just going to have a bunch of people joining and never using it for anything but leeching the "members only great hits section" I remember when I started on mturk before this site started, I felt the same way about this site as some you feel about your sacred greatest hit section. At the end of the day mturk is public and anyone can work on it, if you don't want a bunch a people leeching your hits keep your mouth shut about them. I had no problem before, now or will in the future making 80 to100 bucks a day when I try. I and other turkers who know what they are doing don't need to leech a site to do it, just saying.

Signs me out too. I have posted probably 3 or 4 times this morning ( last 2 hours) and have had to log in each time.

( Unless there is a way I can do it with only this site, I dont' want to change my internet settings. I don't want other sites, facebook, etc to always be logged in. )

There are several reasons this site, this forum and the particular thread in question will remain open... The specific reasons are beyond the scope of this post - but it is worth mentioning that these decisions are not made in a vacuum.

As far as making the daily thread, the Greatest HITs Forum or this Forum as a whole members only or HITs only, that will not happen either. It is not what this Forum stands for and if it ever did stand for it - I would leave! There are plenty of other Forums you can "beg" to become a *special* member of if you prefer such an environment. I belong to most of them and enjoy my time there for what it is. They have their system and mTurk Forum has its own.

I started that thread (Can't Find Good HITs) and it is exactly the way I started it and enjoy it for the most part. Now the thread has grown and has very little to do with me which is wonderful! Original contributors such as Ashbreaksstuff, Granit, Cowfin, Dallasa, Nature Girl, FootballChick, Moutheater, SaladPope, TrickyTurkster, flora, 2MuchTurkin, and so many others whom started that thread with me are all still here - all still contributing in so many ways (not just Great HITs.) The thread generally self moderates and it is what it is and the way in was intentioned.

Every one should keep in mind they are welcome to create their own thread any time. Whether this be HITs only, Survey's only, or whatever they choose. Nothing is keeping any one glued to that thread and they should feel free to create their own as many others have over the past 4 months. Feel free to not get involved - but please don't complain that it doesn't meet your needs or expectations. It was not designed for such! It was designed for and its original purpose was to bring up Great HITs when they were there and then discuss them when needed as well as have friendly conversation. When things get out of line - the thread is fully capable of taking out the trash.

To summarize: The "Can't Find Good HITs" thread is exactly the way it was designed to be. Take it or leave it. And any member is welcome to start their own thread that suits their specific needs, desires, wants or whims. In the meantime if you don't like it - don't read it and certainly don't make demands of it or the forum.

Sorry if I sound harsh, but that is simply how I feel.

Of course not, but you aren't in the majority of turkers, and probably not even in the majority of lurkers. I think the majority of turkers probably never collect a single dime. They do a few hits, then give up. The portion of turkers that are capable of making 80-100 dollars a day is probably 1 in 10k ... if even that.

I am not a well established member here, and I think I have posted 1 or 2 hit leads in the greatest hit thread. However, given that most turkers will never collect any sort of money for the work they do, it seems at the very least unfortunate that they are getting some of the good hits. It doesn't really benefit them in any way other than possibly encouraging them to persist.

I am right in the middle here. Seeing as I haven't contributed much of anything, I don't think my opinion really matters all that much, but I think I can still give a little perspective. I lean towards requiring membership, but as that would reduce incentive for people to continually come back to the site... that is taking ad impression money out of somebody's pocket. Not to mention that it could have a negative effect on signup rates and therefore the rate of gaining potential contributors.
