I have a couple of questions for CW (ok actually just one right this second but I'm going to think about this for a bit) that I'm going to email relating to the style guide. If anyone has any unanswered questions, something they'd like clarified and whatnot, post them here. I'll collect them and send them all off at once to give us a better chance to get them all answered.

My question (please speak up if you already know the answer) is about moderate sized number ranges. When someone says "two to three thousand", I wrote it as "2,000-3,000", but the style guide doesn't say anything about how to handle ranges. So that's my question.

    Anyone have any?

I would usually write, "2 to 3,000." Don't know if that's officially right but that's how I do it.

I asked about this in a comment to a transcript I submitted last night where this question originated for me. Here is what I got:

Personally I disagree, I think it reads exactly the same. But there's clarification.

I've had a few of those. I used "2-3,000" without ill consequences to my grade.

They weren't corrected in the final edit, despite what the grader/editor/whoever left me feedback said. I think I'll email CW anyway about it.

I guess nobody else has questions, other than me.

The thing about CW is they've never been really responsive at all. They used to be members of the other place but I'm not so sure that Nathan or Rachel ever signed up when that forum moved. If you do get answers to your questions, will you please post them because sometimes it can be like pulling teeth to get them to reply to an email, but can you include something in your email about when they update the style guide to make sure it's noted in the big bold letters in the hits that it has been updated because some of the old timers probably haven't even looked at that thing in some time. I happened to come across the new changes when I was grading and was needing justification on something about those ...

In my experience, CW replies fairly quickly to tickets opened through support.castingwords.com, so you might want to try that.

Here's one question for CW. What is the opposite of mm-hmm?

Mm-hmm is an expression of agreement, but it's the only one mentioned in the Style Guide. What if someone "hmms" in disagreement?

I think it's mm-mm, but I'm not sure. It would be nice to know the preferred spelling of CW.

I'll ask, but I usually leave those out unless it's an answer to a question, in which case I replace it with "Yes". I've never seen anyone edit them back in before.

Interesting. It never crossed my mind to replace the hmm's with yes/no, and even if it did, I probably wouldn't have done it for fear of getting a bad grade. I'll keep that in mind, thanks.
