I admit that I've been guilty of this. But mostly when I worked in an industry that didn't care if you were ill, you better get your ass to work. That went from the top of the company to the bottom. It wasn't just illness either. Your mom died and her funeral is today? I'm so sorry to hear that, now get your ass to work. But when i had an office gig, I usually stayed home. The one exception is the 6 weeks I had walking pneumonia, I took some days off, but mostly worked through it.

On that first job, I remember being at the site and having our medic notice a lady who was visibly ill. It was a rainy day and she was walking to work. We found out after some translation, she didn't speak English, that she worked at a restaurant. The medic called her work and told them she was unfit to work that day. The right thing to do, but very hypocritical considering we weren't allowed to call in sick ourselves-- even the medics would work with a cold. You know this woman wasn't going to be paid for not working. And who knows she may have gotten in trouble for not showing up. That's assuming she didn't go around the block then continue her walk to work.
