The math would favor it, but a huge batch of quick HITs often gets completed faster than a smaller batch of multi-task HITs, and that's a priority for some requesters. Even though time is wasted in loading one HIT at a time for the quick HITs, workers are usually hindered more by the information overload of a multi-task HIT. Additional mental effort gets expended just dealing with the extra distraction caused by more on the screen -- making sure one is clicking in the right place, verifying that one has completed all the given tasks, and so on. That's one of the reasons why I won't do the mtlabel picture HITs (besides thinking classifying 300 images for 5 cents is ridiculous). Improved layout would help in some cases. I'm totally with you there. I'd rather do batch HITs most of the time, especially the good ones like research, but I understand why some requesters choose to do otherwise. There's growing awareness of MTurk in academia, but I think only because a brave few pioneers gave it a try and wrote papers about their experiences. If Amazon ever gets into marketing MTurk again like they did in the first year, I'd love to see them do a major outreach to universities and research labs.
The academic surveys are pretty interesting, but I am curious how the educational institutions validate the information they get from Mturk returns and what type of control groups they might have. They might be good for class projects, but I'd hate to think government or corporate $$$ were dependent on the replies they got from here!
I usually do them, especially if they have multiple hits on them. Just the other day I did a $.01 hit that had 254 hits with it. Done been approved. Usually if you do the low paying ones with a lot of hits it adds up.
I do the low paying HITs if they are very quick to complete. The biggest reason is to increase my approval rate.
I'll do a batch of cheap HITs to get my approval headed back the right way if I get a Rejection. I kind of think of it as penance. Did I get greedy and try for the $5 "install our game" HIT and get Rejected? (Mike Rama you SUCK.) Well, now I need to do 50 quick penny hits that I know will get approved immediately to make my Approval rate back.
I do it only to increase my approved percentage because currently my approved % is below 98 so need to improve it.
