Beware of some rogue requesters out there to get you. They will reject a hell lot of your work while you are trying to earn the 5 cent jobs. A requester just rejected 100 of my hits giving some lame excuses. It dropped my hit approval rate. It's better to be with the old trusted requesters than the new rogue ones exploiting us and mturk. There should be a requester reporting button in Mturk or else all turkers will hesitate to work for new requesters. This will weed out the misers who think they are smart.

Oh no, 100 hits rejected in one go must hurt so much. What is your approval rate now? I am so reliant on Turkopticon that until it is working again I am not risking any HITs except the few I know to be good.

97% approval rate for now. and you can never catch the bad requester for he is always changing name and coming back. Mturk is like an open market or like a flea market. Come buy and go with no records. You might be thinking that you have purchased a blender while at home it turns out to be a rotten fish.

If things don't change then I'm going for Odesk and Elance.

I can't seem to get any work from those sites. Spend all my time applying for jobs, getting ignored completely by the providers or just being rejected with no discussion. Tried a few writing jobs but the people just wanted free articles without paying for my work ("a test" they said). I have no idea how to proceed or succeed with them.

I agree interneteditor. I've repeatedly gone back to odesk and similar sites and bid on a few jobs. Most of the time I don't hear anything. And the pay rates I have seen haven't been any better than Mturk.

It does appear that most of the scam requesters on Mturk are either the really low paying jobs like the penny HITS or the ridiculously high paying credit card scams. I do check Turkopticon but if it's a writing job and the requester hasn't been reviewed yet I will usually do at least one HIT for them and see how that goes.

Sorry about the mass rejections shariqueahmer. I have nightmares about stuff like that...

ODesk has 500000 members and some are really old experienced members. ODesk gets 10% of every job. So that's why the job only goes to the user with the highest bid and so people like you and me who give a small bid never get the job for that would mean a small commission or Odesk. I always look for other budding companies like Odesk since they have less competition than Odesk.

I try to always check TO before doing a hit. If they don't have a rating, I will test the waters and do 2 or 3. If they come back with more jobs and a good rating on TO, I'll do more work.

I never do 100s of anybody unless they have a long track record on mTurk. That's why we need to encourage everyone to report to TO whether the requester was good or bad.

Shariqueahmer, Odesk has nothing to do with awarding jobs. it is the person that posted the job gets the ability to choose who. I have posted jobs on Odesk before and within 5 minutes I have submissions. What happens is that US/UK/EU workers normally want $6-$20 an hour. Many SE Asia, Indian, Bangladesh, Pakistan normally come in at $1 or less an hour.

What is nice - is that you can see random screenshots of what the person is working on. I had a task to do some research and give me websites based on something. Though they said they worked 3 hours, 60-70% of the time they were in IM or reading their email. The only thing you can do there is fire them. You still have to pay the few hours. That is why the first job I ask for is 2-3 hour "Test". Or I may ask for a "test" that takes under 5 mins to do to see if they can even do the task. - This would be something that would take hours to complete.

But curious, what other sites beside Odesk, Elance and rentacoder are there?

Yeah but it's the competition from so many qualified people there that is resulting in poor awarind of jobs to everybody. Damn population explosion.

I have to admit I have had a good worker from Bangladesh that was quick in responding to what I needed worked on. Though I do bonus out when things like that happen.
But htese are things I just don't want to spend time doing - looking up websites for a project idea and things like that.

But again I am also turker trying to turk for a few pennies here and there :)
