mmm. agreed. If you are a horribly slow typer or are missing a hand or something Dragon can help. This is what it is made for. It is NOT made for scribing random voices and such... ONLY YOUR OWN AND YOU MUST TRAIN IT PROPERLY.

    1. I have a coworker that has DNS for his job (Disabled to where he can not type well) - It does not work well. Has to say things over and over sometimes.

    2. DO you not think if DNS worked perfect they would even NEED YOU for this job? It would just be edit and final edit.

    3. Have you heard some of the audio - the background noise, the 3-5 speakers, they speak too fast, mispronounce words.. Trust me... I have done some grading jobs and I have seen where it was obvious someone tried to use DNS or other software.. You can see their score tank fast.

    4. Don't do it.

    5. Don't do it

    6. NO NO NO

    7. No.

    Kthanx

Jump to conclusions much on this forum? I am not talking about automating any jobs. I still have to format correctly. I have to go back and add things in like speaker tokens. I have to proofread and make sure that there are no errors in homonyms and such. What I do is actually pretty complicated its more of a combination of my speech recognition software and my keyboard/mouse. I don't automate anything and my speechink score is at 95. I regularly have to check in the style guide to look up things I'm not sure about. I change audio into accurate text as efficiently as I can. That's the job as I understand it. I guess I am just one of those rare people that can talk faster than I can type. Did I buy it just for transcription HITs? No. I avoid them when at all possible. Did it take some getting used to and time to learn? Yes. Banned? No. Lazy? You wish.

Maybe you should ask yourself that question, as I was referring to the OP not you. I saw your post about using it to help you. I still think it's ridiculous but you go ahead and tell yourself whatever you need to sleep at night. Lazy, maybe not so much.

I still think this thread is going to give people the wrong idea and there will be many, many scammers bootlegging DNS to try to automate the transcription process.

Heck I avoid transcription jobs - I just did about 140+ Audio difficulty grading. 2-3 min each audio -So i was able to do all that in about 1 hour. Granted thats about $5 - But hey - go burn tough those 1-2 min audio - but dont make me I told you so when you get a bad grade.

... Congrats? You want a cookie? Those are great stats, but doesn't sell me on using transcribing software to do transcription HITs. I understand that you, and I mean that literally you, have to decipher potentially incoherent audio and speak it clearly for your software. What I'm seeing though is borderline condoning a worker who sounds like he wants to strap a headset to a speaker and letting the software transcribe. And that makes me want to put a brick through my computer screen, fer realz.

I don't condone any type of scamming on MTurk. One worker scams and we all look bad. However, if somebody wants to try that, I say let em waste over $100 to be very disappointed. Serves em right. It doesn't work that way. And yes, a cookie would be nice as long it's not one of the yucky kind with raisins.

Phoolishness, I agree with Booty on the OP. It sounds like he is expecting some sort of easy way out of doing the actual work.

My dad used to use DNS for his newspaper columns because he had a nerve disease that slowly destroyed the feeling in his hands. It took an enormous amount of patience and training to get it to work efficiently, for his voice and his work.

Transcription is one of the few Mturk skills that can be transferred to the real world. It is worth learning how to do well. So is typing. I really hate to sound preachy, but I really don't want people to get illusions about how easy it is to use speech recognition software for transcription. It isn't a magic bullet.

OMgosh, all the best conversations happen when I am not here :) I feel everything I wanted to say to the OP has been covered excellently well by others.

But... yes OP made it sound like they wanted a quick route through the transcription stuff and I agree with flaming that idea.

Can't remember who said it already, I agree as my main thought was that if the companies who post the transcription HITs could get a $100 bit of software to do the work, we wouldn't even be talking about this. You can bet your ass they have tried all of that before looking at crowd sourcing.

Another point is, it will take this OP (and anyone else who tries VR software) longer to do those HITs than it takes the people who should be doing them (fast, accurate typists with excellent English skills). So we will be gobbling them up rapidly while he is still sat there repeating things over and over to his software. We all know what the resultant text will come out like (piss poor) so OP will still need excellent keyboard and English skills to correct the transcription.

If they don't run corrections it won't take long before they are graded out of business.

That's the point, I want to make phool, that DNS can be used to turn out rough transcripts and then edit it. It's not bad if you get some assistance from a software and it saves your time, you still have to edit it to Speechink guidelines. Anyway I believe Speehink handpicks the most badass audio clips which nobody wants to do in their regular onsite team and puts it in mturk, so that it painstakingly gets transcribed from a poor soul like me.

What are your speechink transcription tips Phool and how much do you make doing their hits.

If it's sooooo horrible, do something else. I don't think you're getting the point.

Do you plan on listening to the audio, deciphering it, speaking with YOUR MOUTH into the voice recognition software, and then editing it? -- This is fine.

Or are you trying to let DNS do the initial transcription and you edit? -- If this is the case, why don't you contact the transcription companies you work for and let them know that this is what you're doing and see how they react.
