Hello! I'm new here and have been using Turk for almost a week now. I was hoping someone could help me.

At this point I have 100% Approval for the HIT's I've Submitted. But on the HIT's I've Accepted, my Returned and Abandoned rate aren't that great. My Returned is 23% (83) while my Abandoned is 5% (19). I don't recall ever abandoning a HIT, maybe it was by accident? But with the Returned ones, I sometimes return HIT's if I'm not very confident that I will be able to accurately complete them. I'd like to keep my Approved HIT's that I've submitted at 100%.

Anyways, do you know if my Return and Abandon rate look really bad to those who I do work for? Can they even see it? I'm worried about my Return rate increasing and looking even worse. I wasn't sure if that really mattered. I'm hoping my 100% approval on work I've actually submitted would be the most and only important thing.

Your returned rate has no effect but I saw one that required a certain abandoned rate, very rare that will matter though

You will most likely get abandons by refreshing a hit as it accepts it a second time and you might not have noticed. I have lots of abandons from back in the day doing Oscar hits. It is no biggie but do try to not let it get out of hand. When in doubt click the 'hits assigned to you' button to make sure there is not a straggler in there waiting to expire.

I don't think your "returned HITS" really go against you all that much. Most requesters would have you return one than abandon it because you ran into an interruption or just didn't like the HIT once you were in there. But do be sure to check "hits assigned to you" because I've had that happen more than once and didn't know they were there.

To me, returning a HIT is just a courtesy if you can't do it, so someone else can pick it up. Hang in there - Turking has it's own rhythm and flow a sometimes a large learning curve! But I hope you will like it and welcome!

    ... Returned 3439
... Abandoned 415 and still counting...

I've never had a problem with returned/abandoned being high.

My returned rate is kind of high because I do so many transcriptions and sometimes the short clips they give you aren't enough to be able to tell it's too difficult to understand. My abandoned rate changes for no reason. I'll be working on one hit, submit it successfully, go back the next day, be paid for it but my abandoned rate will go up. ???? I've contacted amazon about it but I just got the usual form letter explaining how you get an abandoned hit, blah blah blah. They did say return rate isn't really ever looked at so not to worry about that one.

Yeah I have a few of abandons from doing crowdflower stuff... I have learned to check what hits are assigned to me every once in a while. It is apparently really easy to abandon a hit without even being aware of it.

But, I have never seen a hit that had an abandon rate restriction. I don't think it matters much for normal usage. I am however paranoid that a high abandon rate might have an effect on things like Master Qualification (not that I have any reason to believe this), so I try to keep it low.

dont care about your return rates, but never allow abandon rate above 20%, coz some requesters like ProductRNR asking an abanbon rate below 20%. So keep an eye on it.
    Happy turking :)

Your abandon rate may come from surveys that never got submitted. In my first few weeks, I didn't realize that many surveys require just one more "next" before they fully submit. Anything that takes you to another website to complete the hit has a possibility of being abandoned if you aren't looking out. I return hits all the time because they're fishy looking, I don't understand how to do them, or they end up taking way too long. That's another reason you could have abandoned something without realizing it. You could time out. If the timer is too short, it will abandon your hit.

I feel better after reading this thread. I'm still in my 10 days. Everything was fine. Doing a couple hits per day to get familiar. Went to 4 per day, then 6. Was at 100%. Today seems to be a disaster. Started with 2 abandoned hits that I don't know how I got. Then I've been using TurkAlert most of the time to go to HITS, but sometimes go to Mturk site and load hits available to me. There seems to be a difference in doing that, and maybe going back and forth between those 2 to access hits is causing me problems.

It's just been one thing after another today, and now I'm at 81% with 3 abandons and 3 returns. The Mturk interface seemed to go crazy when I was doing a hit. I didn't click the submit button because I was working on the hit, and it got submitted, somehow. I was told that I could only have 1 job open, and that's what I thought I had open. I'm feeling a little down, but that's why I clicked and thanked just about everyone here, because reading this thread made me feel that all is not lost. Happy Holidays.

I like doing them...most are very easy and I love having the explanations of what they want right beside the pictures. I have never had a problem with them paying or refusing...very responsive to emails as well.

This is part of the nice email that I got from Amazon Mturk admin, after I bombarded them with 2-3 frantic, rookie emails:

    Hello,

Your Amazon Mechanical Turk dashboard will display the 'HITs You Have Accepted' for the life of your account. The values for 'Returned' and 'Abandoned' HITs are displayed for information purposes only. The majority of Requesters focus on the Approval rate for your account when setting Qualifications for their HITs. The Approval rate is determined by the percentage of HITs approved of those that you have submitted. Since HITs that are returned or abandoned are not submitted these HITs will not affect your approval rating.

If you have any further questions, please contact us at:

I was pretty discouraged, because I like to do an excellent job at whatever I do. Despite the unexplainable occurances that I noted in my post, I did make a good decision. Before I even got a reponse from admin, I decided to dive back in and begin to do HITS again, because I don't like to be beaten. My % had dropped, and I felt it was unfair, but it has already began to increase. My % of approved HITS, however, has remained at 100.

This frightening experience has helped me to be more careful, and to pay closer attention, though I felt I was already doing that.

I think you're making too big of a deal out of this. Don't worry about returning HITs, if you can't do it, or it isn't for you, then don't do it. The only requester who cares about returns is Oscar Smith, and getting blocked by him can almost be a good thing, as it opens your eyes to higher paying tasks.

As for abandonments, 2muchTurkin had it right before. If you have the Auto-Accept the Next HIT box checked, and you use the back/forward buttons or refresh the page, you are assigned another one. Just be careful with that, and check the HITs assigned to you box once an hour or so. In the end, abandoned rate is unimportant as well, with the exception of PRnR. This isn't too brag, but my abandonment rate is 0.03%, and I rarely check the HITs assigned to me. Just be careful when working in batches, and only accept a survey if you are going to do it immediately, or if it high paying and you will remember to do it.

Just relax about these things. By stressing about it, you're only making the issue worse and distracting yourself from the real goal: making money. If you absolutely have to think about it, try to keep it in the back of your mind.
