Not sure what's next, if this practice continues, they probably won't need masters, some masters refused to work the last batch at 50 cents, most might not touch it at 35 cents, but non-masters will, I think the pool of work has already become limited for some non-master and everyone's situation is different when it comes to turking
I just felt like noting I wasn't dead because I love you all. I'm better than I was. Hope Oscar has been good
So how do we handle taxes? I kid... Thank you so much though for reminding me that while I've finally got myself out of debt, I am going to owe the IRS a small fortune. I would have preferred to remain in denial for a few more months.
It's not necessarily a Masters problem. A lot of good paying requesters, regardless of quals set, have quickly or eventually reduced pay as they learn various things. These could be things like overestimating how look it takes workers to complete a task (and thus paying "too much"), seeing work devoured rapidly and testing lowering pay and seeing it still get devoured rapidly, seeing the pay rates of other similar requesters, etc. Mixed in are problems like requesters getting bad results, whether that's the fault of the requester (bad instructions, whatever) or the workers, and thus dropping pay because they don't want to pay for "bad results" while not going through the effort to do something like set up a private qualification for good workers or fixing something that's wrong with their setup. So then you basically rely on either the requester having a decent heart or a lot of money. Some will pay a good wage for correct work because they believe in workers getting fair payment. Others might have a lot of money so they're okay with whatever. Others are on budgets or don't care about the worker, just the results, and they'll find a medium between crap pay/acceptable results. And some requesters will try mturk and leave for a variety of reasons, whether the above are related or not, while new requesters will filter in, or old ones will return. And so the cycle continues and mturk churns on... So what's next? I'm not exactly sure what you're asking. This cycle has been going on and on. Are you talking about alternative platforms where things are run differently, turker unions to protest poor pay, etc? Those things and ideas pop up and some get going and some are still going or in development, but I don't think they have much impact on how things actually turn out.
Hell, Oscar's long gone. The whole turkosphere has changed, in fact. Glad you're doing better! Been missing your snark around here. Are you back for good or just a quick visit?
That's exactly my point though. There are batches that the masters boycott. They have a union in a sense, but others will do those hits for less pay, myself included. I do those hits because for me a non-master, they pay well. It makes no sense for me to abstain from doing a hit that pays 50% more than the ones that I usually do simply because someone else thinks the requester is being cheap. How can Mturk workers unionize as a whole without discounting the fact that everyone is trying to make a buck?
I work 50 hours a week now so I doubt I return in my true form but if you would like me to pop in and shit talk a terrible HIT here and there I can probably manage that I do miss you assholes, you were my only friends for a bit. But you didn't pay enough
They can't. You can't organize people from different economic conditions who all have a different purpose for being here, different skillsets, etc. That's why people say turk your own turk. Make the best of what comes and goes and try not to let what other people do (or don't do) be a negative influence.
I'm rich! After nearly two days, I *finally* caught a make-up HIT that a requester put out for me. I wonder how many people's queues it has been in...
Not going to happen and never will like I said what's cheap for me is likely a goldmine for someone else and you have to take into consideration mturk does not mean the same for everyone, I have a full-time job that pays well and a spouse who has a full-time job as well, but I cannot say the same thing for someone else, I can afford to not work for a requester who has lowered their pay, someone who turks full-time may not be able to do so. As db42 said, "turk your own turk"
I replied to another post, so I will not repeat myself, but yes I was speaking mostly about the mini unions that I see here. I don't think that will ever work on a platform like Mturk. The jobs still get done. The jobs are still going to get done. New workers are coming in every day, and I'm sure that some of them are lousy, but some of them are likely worth their salt. We have to prove ourselves somehow.
ROFL. Yes, please come back from time to time. BDB (now just B) is still around most days/evenings. He'd be happy to see you I'm sure. Some of the others still pop in, too. And yeah, I totally hear you on the pay thing. You made the right move, but ya still gotta come hang out sometimes!
BDB is still here? Pass. Love you guys. Might not be around without you. Sleep well. Except you red wings guy
It's the same for me for the most part. My husband and I work much more than full time a lot of weeks during the tourist season which will end mid-November. I started doing this about a month and a half ago to see if I could pick up a bit of extra money during the off-season. I thought it was laughable at first, but I have far exceeded my goals and expectations already. I'm amazed to tell you the truth.
90% of the Taylor's aren't even doable. There's not going to be 5 contacts with titles for JimBob's Lawn Service, which most of them are.
Good for you and I could attest to that, mturk has allowed us to take a number of vacations this year.
