I agree with all of this. When I forced myself to eat beef again, I kept telling myself I probably already had it (CJD) anyway to help get over that hump. It is amazing how long it takes to show up and how quickly it kills once it does. And it really bothers me the way factory farming works. Not just because there is no need to treat the animals that way, but also because treating the animals that way puts us at higher risk of having something happen. You would be shocked and disturbed if you found out what happened to that HUGE meat recall that was mostly sent to public schools across the country. Our system sucks where things like that are concerned.

Our system just generally sucks regarding the humane treatment of livestock. I can honestly say that the only reason why I ever ate meat or eggs is because I just made inherent assumptions, without thinking much about it, that certain practices would not be allowed in factory farming because they would be considered animal abuse. I was incredibly shocked at how wrong I was. I kind of just don't understand it at all. Why is it okay to literally torture and abuse a baby chick, but not a kitten? Why is it okay to torture a pig, but not a dog? I don't know how these strange, mental lines are drawn. Even if we are not talking about animal welfare, I worry a lot about how useless antibiotics (for humans, livestock, and pets) are becoming due to their wide-spread abuse in factory farming. I worry about "super-bugs" we are creating due to antibiotic abuse. I worry that new antibiotics are not being created to replace the ones we are rendering useless. The whole system is broken on so many levels.
