I'm pretty sure the Obama administration already changed the rules where if you don't have to start paying your loans back until you make over a certain level of income, and when you do the max they can seek from you is something like 10% of your income. That seems really reasonable. Forgiving someone's whole debt seems to negate a person's personal responsibility.

Yeah, the ridiculous costs of college are what happens when you let all powerful all good free markets decide the price of something necessary like education. Fun results!!!

Talk to a college grad with 75K+ in student loan debt and no viable job options other than f'n volunteering or 35K a year which is the same. In today's market that's suicide. They'll tell you, they wish the hell they never bought into the bs of a higher education brick n mortar b/c as HappyFish said, if you have a half a brain you can get the education online for pennies on the dollar.

Agreed. College kids aren't politically connected enough to actually just get out of their debt. (Only the bankers get to do that!) The thing that the lenders realize is that you can't get blood from a stone, and college degrees aren't worth much at all. Better to be proactive and ensure that payments occur than the student just goes bankrupt or whatever.

The other side of the equation is the massive amount of money that is being injected into the system. Maybe they will funnel some of that money to more grants and whatever, driving the cost even higher. It's really anybody's guess as to what the reaction to this crisis will be.

Free markets aren't deciding the price of education. The government is heavily involved at every step. Don't worry about how much it costs! We'll make sure you can pay for it. Don't worry about it! We have a simple loan program for you! I wonder why costs are going up? Don't worry about it! Every American has the right to go to college!

The free market is college level courses available for free on the internet.

I know for a fact that you've never had to deal with the things that you're talking about seeing as you think 35k is something to scoff at

Right now is the best possible time for anybody who's got an idea and is willing to run with it. Making your own income on the internet has never been so easy. Skip the 100k in student loan debt and dive right into making your idea a reality. You have basically the entire span of human knowledge at your fingertips, all you have to do is apply yourself and learn it *shrug*

(Now to blow the mind of our friend, this is where I say that I think we should stop the wars and use every cent saved on American health care before another American has to spend a single penny on it)

Yeah let me know how that works out for you chief. You're just proving that the only people who believe in Randian economic theory and all this "pull yourself up by your bootstraps" shit is only believed by children and people who don't actually live in reality.

And when you subsidize something, what happens to the cost? The college will charge as much as they can get away with charging, because the government is the one taking out the loans. This is super basic stuff here, man :(

Oh noooo, I'll never be able to bootstrap my way through not getting a degree because I used half a brain and just "learned" things online.

It's really funny to hear someone that discharged 140k of debt talk about bootstrapping and this type of shit

just when i thought maybe you could be a reasonable person you decide it's time to personally insult the whole forum. you're like the bastard love child of vitalis and mtnsurf. congrats.

implying that everyone here worships free market capitalism? i never heard anyone say that. you're obviously basing this on people's reactions to rubin's price drop because you just can't fucking let it go or let other people make their own fucking decisions without your worthless two cents.

you're the kind of asshole who gives political and economic liberals a bad name. you live in a fucking fantasy world and just point out the inadequacies of an obviously broken system because you're only in it to feel like you're right and point out how everyone else is wrong. i'm a goddamn socialist, borderline communist, my fucking idol is antonio fucking gramsci, but i accept that the system i live in, which wasn't built or supported by me, exists, and every day that i don't do something to change it then i'm as much a part of the problem as anything else.

    tl;dr, get bent.
