My solution to get away from family mess was to move to a different continent. Can relate with ohsostrange. Have an older brother who can walk on water. Life got a lot better once I was far away. Looking back I can say that I learned how not to create a life full of misery and tears. I have been keeping a diary since I was 9. That has been my therapy. Will destroy them all before I die. No point in passing the dark family secrets to future generation.

My family screwed me too, in other ways. My brother and SIL are very sick people, and we have broken off completely, after years of on-and-off. I have a nephew who never emails or calls, grandnieces I've never met. You can't be a total recluse, I have to disappoint you. People still need each other's goods and services.
