best class ever

 

A lot of our friends use to do faire. I never got into the guild I have garb that I wear when we go. Sadly, a lot of our venus have shut down or are at least an hour away now.

 

I'm jelly! I've always wanted to dress up and go to one of those!

 

Yeah it was in a comparative history of ideas class... I remember taking a class where the homework was to play Mirror's Edge.. It was a great class. There was another class about Bioshock (talking about the subtexts, imagery, etc.) but that was always full. I remember there was also a class where we talked about the uncanny valley. Saw Blade Runner. That was awesome.

There was a class about pokemon the card game.. though I couldn't take it because it conflicted with a mandatory class.

 

My college offered one of those a few years after I graduated. They made a BFD out of it in the alumni magazine, and the alum response was basically "...so?"

(Granted, I went to a school where the scifi club was the largest club on campus, and you could design your own major, as well as petition for classes. So the fact that someone had figured out how to combine acting, game theory, costume design, and science, for credit, really surprised absolutely nobody. If anything, we were surprised that the guy who ended up teaching it actually had room in his schedule to teach more classes than his usual courseload.)

 

I used to go to sci-fi conventions when I was a kid. Those were big fun. I've been wanting to go to comic con forever.

School is so much cooler now. The best classes we had were Film History and one about music in the 60's and 70's which was kind of fun but not as fun as it sounded when I signed up for it.

 

That's like the only big convention that's ever near me. Everything else is always on the west coast.

PAX is going on this weekend (as well as the friday that just passed / still here for 2 more hours). I couldn't get a pass My friend offered me a Friday Pass but I don't have a ride (parking is a ripoff in downtown) and I don't want to take a bus during rush hour. There's always next year though. I might even be a developer, and not an attendee xD

SUPER expensive. Garb costs, guild fees, faire fees but we always got to hang out "behind the scenes" and got to meet a lot of really awesome people. If you ever get a chance, make friends w/ an Irish guild. They are by far, the most fun out of anyone (besides maybe the gypsies).
I think my fav all time story was right after the BF and I got together and his cousin's guild took over the "arresting booth" (where people pay to have their friends arrested and "tortured"). I was in charge of getting and keeping the flasks full. We "water-boarded" my bf and then they turned on me. Ever try to run in 4 layers of soaking wet linen in 110 heat? We did have a friend almost get her foot chopped off in an reenactment battle. That was "fun".

 

I actually wanted to go to that. Was supposed to go last year.

 

Where are you? NYCC is a total cluster*, but there are plenty of great, smaller cons up and down the east coast. Depending on what you want to get out of it, sometimes the smaller ones are even better.

 

Theres one in jersey thats a lot better than comic con, I just cant think of the name rite nao xD
