    Hey all:

We are still working on populating our library - better known as the "Resources Forum" right here on mTurk.

I see we have a lot of new people.

From your point of view what type of information would have been helpful when you first started working on AMT? What kind of questions do you still have? What information would be useful to other newbies or seasoned workers?

Please post your suggestions here so we can create the articles necessary to answer your questions as well as provide the information to all of the new users we have and continue to get.

If you are interested in helping write some helpful articles please feel free to PM me!

    Thanks!

    nominations

    Hi,

I'm sure I can come up with others, but here are just a couple of subjects that were recently asked about. The reason I am nominating them is that these are actually common questions, so they come up repeatedly, even if not constantly. I've also gone ahead and added a couple others off the top of my head.

    • How can I contact a requester? Thread example.
    • What happens if my survey HIT expires before I can submit the code? Thread example.
    • How can I find out what HITs to avoid? Oh, what's TurkOpticon? How do I look up requesters in it? (didn't look for an example, but I think most experienced forum members can answer these questions in detail)
    • Why isn't my money available yet for withdrawal? I just joined 2 days ago, and now I'm wondering if this is a scam. (First 10 days issue---might need to list it under "money" category or similar, as well, so people can have another to find it)

Also, something to think about is how it will be handled to let people know that there is a resource library. If people forget to tell newbies and just answer these questions each time they are posted, then there's actually less point to having the library, if you see what I mean.

Ok, noob enough here. Started turkin Sep. 27, 2012, Joined this forum, sometime in october. I have been "dropped" from 2 other forums (websites) due to "inactivity", and that's cool with me. I like this forum, and am able to keep up with it pretty regularly, and that's cool.

Make a big bold column/forum that says NEW PEOPLE START HERE. Let it be known, nobody needs instructions on how to follow this forum/website,(hell, we figure it out easy enough),,,Give flat out plain english instructions ON HOW TO TURK! I look back, and it's actually unbelievable that I got no rejects, my 1st 2 weeks of turkin. I know, there is a video, somewhere, in one of the forums here, or on another forum I used to be joined to---AND IT SHOWS----that 1st, you have to "view a hit in this group". And it shows the screen/mouse going up and clicking on "view a hit in this group". Now, take that simplicity, and go from there.

Realize, the noob. Not vocally, but the new person, who has no clue, which button to click next/and/or accept hit, return hit. Pure luck I say, that I did not get mass rejections in my first 2 weeks. When I say about instructions you should post, when I say "dumb it down", I mean seriously, dumb it down. Show an actual video of the screen only, going through the steps, of Turking. (accept, read instructions, cancelling, returning, moving to next 1).

Shit, I just realized this is a post, not PM. OK, so there, Old man here, (get off my lawn), just my 2 cents. Most important point= Big bold screaming letters/title that says, "before you turk, watch this". rant over/going to change oil in a datsun. Cheers!

I have a question even though I'm not totally "new". Say you are in looking at details of hit (but have not accepted it). You decide this isn't something you want to do. Your options are "accept" or "skip". Perhaps you don't want to do any of them at all, so you just "back out" by going to your account. Are these considered "abandoned"? (This is also assuming that they are not listed under your "hits assigned to you" as being non-complete.).

If u have accepted the hit, then u can either do it or click return. If you close the new window or the window where the hit is accepted , then it is a case of abandoning. Both not make much difference to the hit accepting power of yours. If you have not accepted the hit and after seeing the hit and realizing that the hits is not for you, then you can close it, go to the account page, or go to the hits available page etc,,,

The answer to that would be, no, they are not considered abandoned, because you never accepted them.

Right. They can only ever become abandoned if they have shown up on your "HITs Assigned to You" screen. So if you are ever in doubt of whether you accepted something (and thus that you might accidentally abandon it), look there.

You can only accept a HIT by hitting "Accept." Hitting "Skip" or just backing out of looking at the batch without ever hitting "Accept" does not cause you accept a HIT, and thus you cannot abandon one that way, either.

A related oddity: it is possible to accidentally accept something. For example, if you accept a HIT and it doesn't load properly, so you hit Refresh/F5 to get the page to reload, then certain HITs may register as you having accepted two of them. That will be the one you now have in front of you as well as one other of the same kind. Both will now show in your Hits Accepted display. If you only do one, the other will become abandoned. So, if you ever have to refresh an accepted HIT, check that display after you are done with the one in front of you. You might want to do that before you auto-accept another one, too, so that the accidentally accepted one doesn't get lost in the shuffle.

Great. Another question that can be included in the FAQ. I've seen many complaining about getting 2 hits when they accept one. This is the answer for them. Also, this can happen if you click the back button as well.

    True!

Also, I think this subtopic we're covering would be hard to choose wording for, as in...what question would they be asking? Seems like the kind of thing that people would not know even to ask, or think about asking. Or maybe they would only think to make it a question after they have a higher abandonment rate and can't figure out why.

I seriously am glad I am not in charge of figuring this stuff out. More power to you guys!

I have a question regarding "Skip" someone might be able to clarify. If I skip a hit, will mturk never show it to me again? For example, if I am in a batch of 100 and I skip 10, will I only be able to complete 90...or will it show me the skipped ones again after I've finished all the others?

Also, if it's a survey with only 1 HIT available to me and I skip it, can I never come back to it?

I am of the impression that skip is like ignore and I won't see that HIT again.

    Oh, just remembered something.

Requesters can also post requests and suggestions specifically geared to other requesters and/or workers.

You are right, cowfin. Thanks for the reminder.

So aphotic, ask your question in that thread that cowfin has linked us to, or in a new thread you make, and I'll answer it there, unless someone else does it first! :) You win either way.

I had questions about qualifications. I stayed away from the hits requiring any type of qualification because I didn't understand asking for a qualification and not receiving it did not count as a rejection.

Also I am still trying to figure out how some people are able to do 1000 or more hits per day, so maybe tips in making the most out of your time or how to work faster would help?

Thanks! Would you mind copy/pasting this into the other thread for me?

This may be covered somewhere (I was lazy and didn't check). I think a separate set of questions for surveys. What the consent forms look like and why they exist, what are the types attention checks for, how to keep track of what you've done, how they take you "out of mTurk", how you have to submit them and copy a number back in mTurk and submit there too (I abandoned a lot of surveys in my first weeks that way).

Then a separate one for quick batches - how to utilize the "accept next", what to do if you can't do a captcha before someone else accepts the next one, how to open 2-3 tabs, how keyboard strokes can help, etc.

For the most part, it's not covered yet. That would be another good guide covering the basics. If anyone is willing to write that guide, please PM me.
