Hi I'm New to this. I want to start using the mturks but the social security scared me. Will I get charged taxes and most importantly could I lose my welfare from making this small amount of
side money such as say 500$?
    Thanks
    Adam

You'd have to report it to your worker and see what they'd say

Yes, you must pay taxes on your income.

You start having to pay taxes only when you make 600 dollars from ONE requester. Not 600 dollars in total earnings.

You should keep a record of who you work for and how much they pay you so you know if you've made $600 from them. Legally, you are self-employed and must report ALL income or it's fraud.
Like you won't pay taxes if you win $500 on a lottery scratch off, but if you're receiving welfare, then you're supposed to report it as income. Of course, people don't report winning scratch offs because it will affect their benefits.

Legally you have to pay taxes no matter what amount you make and no matter how may requesters. The requesters only need to send out a 1099 if you make over $600 for them but LEGALLY you are REQUIRED to pay taxes on ANY amount of money you earn. No matter if it is $600 or $5.

Like IMAWUBBER said, the $600 limit only relates to when requesters are obligated to provide you with a 1099.

Generally, the self employed have to make at least $400 before they have to file but the reporting threshold for 1099-MISC is $600 so Amazon won't give out your Social Security # until they've paid you at least $600.
    The FAQ says,
"It is important to note that only Requesters who have paid you at least the IRS tax reporting threshold ($600 in 2008) can request the information you provided for tax reporting purposes. Amazon verifies that you have earned over the tax reporting threshold for the Requester before releasing your tax information. We verify that the Requester has a valid employer identification number (EIN)."

Just get a job and get off welfare. Quit being a leech on society.

So what you are really asking is, can I still take hard working taxpayers money and get a job on the side?

Why has this reply not been removed for flaming?
When you grow up you find out about a thing called circumstance. There are disabled people on social security that work and report their earnings every month. There's nothing wrong with someone who has applied, qualified, and received social security asking questions about taxes.

    Agreed.

There are different types of 'welfare'. Please do not ASSume just because someone receives assistance that they are some lazy tart laying around in their pajama's eating bon-bons and watching Jerry Springer. That comment was completely uncalled for.

Wow! Is it necessary that we bash someone without a mile in their mocassins? We don't know this person's circumstances! I say he/she is commendable for wishing to earn here, when unable to go out physically into the workplace. Who knows - perhaps this person will work in such a dedicated fashion that the welfare pittance will be returned and the person will be able to self-support on mturk. Let's have respect for each other, whatever path we/they are treading.

Anger always stems from fear, so when we are angry, we need to look inside to see what triggered the fear.

I do have to say that the way Rashim commented was VERY uncalled for. However, I would also like to add that it does seem to me that you are trying to "beat" the system in your post Adam. I assume that Rashim is just as tired of those "beating" the system as I am. Those who live in government paid housing, receive government paid food cards, use government paid health insurance and then still earn a living wage that the system does not know about. (And when I say "government paid" I mean taxpayer paid. The government does not have any money or services to give if other people do not pay their taxes.) That unknown job may be selling drugs, working "under the table" or other means of unknown employment that cannot be detected by the system. There have been times in the past when I have been behind someone in line at the grocery store buying steak and shrimp with food stamps as I am buying hamburger and macaroni w/cheese to try and feed my family of five. Then as this person is driving away in their VERY nice luxury vehicle I am getting into my beat up POS car that is about on its last leg. All of this while my baby is on the antibiotics that I had to pay an arm and a leg for since my health insurance hardly covers shit as opposed to those sitting in the ER waiting room for a simple common cold.

I have NO problem helping someone who is going through hard times and needs a little help now and then. I DO however, have a BIG problem with those who make welfare a lifetime ride that they never want to get off of even IF the can.

I am in the same boat, in the process of filing for SSD because of a work injury. It is perfectly legal to work while you are collecting SSD. I was informed that I will be able to make up to $1,000.00 a month on top of my disability payment.

Laser45v, my Mother is an Accountant and you can make up to $600.00 per year without reporting it to the IRS, on top of what you are allowed to work.

I was under the impression that this Forum was here for us to help each other, not to be nasty and be called a leech on society.

Rashim, for your info Social Security is NOT welfare. It is for persons that have an injury and cannot perform at a job anymore that they were previously able to do, cannot be trained for anything else because of their age or education, or retired. Please get your facts straight before you bash anyone in here. I don't think that Andy, the Administrator here would appreciate your comments, I certainly don't.

Laser45v, if you need any help or have any questions, please feel free to contact me privately. I am going through the same thing and am pretty knowledgeable about it right now. Sorry for your misfortune, I am having a hard time too.

Please read my post to you and don't pay attention to the negativity. I will be contacting Andy, the Administrator about this. We are here to help each other, not to be bashed. Your question was legitimate and I hope I helped you. As I said, please feel free to contact me in a private message if I can help you further.

Trust me Teri I AM NOT sticking up for Rashim. However, if you read Adams post he is receiving welfare not social security.

The mention of social security was about a social security number that amazon ask for, not the receiving of social security benefits.

I am very sorry for your situation good luck to you!

My suggestion is if you have questions about taxes and other "official" issues like that, that could possibly get you in hot water if not done correctly, do NOT ask out on this forum. Go to an accountant or the IRS website to get your answers. You will most likely get a dozen different responses from a forum like this and not ever get the correct answer for your particular circumstances.
