Turkers Talk will return in September. Please see: http://www.mturkforum.com/showthread.php?p=3829

Today's experiment was a great success with four enthusiastic participants on the phone on three continents, sharing thoughts, experiences, ideas. I call this "Turkers Talk" and I'm going to try to list as much info here as I can.

Here is the recording, finally available on Talkshoe: http://recordings.talkshoe.com/TC-22603/TS-239862.mp3

    Twitter: follow @TurkersTalk

For the sessions: http://tr.im/amtchat shows the list of recordings

I will try to put up instructions or hope someone else can help me do that. Basically, there are phone numbers in the USA and in the UK you can call at normal charges.

    USA: (425) 406-3649 UK: 02032981100

If you have a Talkshoe ID, please call (724) 444-7444
an enter 22603# and your PIN followed by #

When you join Talkshoe, you can set a PIN, usually your 10 digit phone number including area code. When you enter your PIN I can see your username to call on you. This is the preferred way to call.

Talkshoe offers a FREE program to allow you to talk using a PC/Mac and headset. Once you join Talkshoe, you can download this Shoephone and use it.

Please join us for further chats, it was wonderful to have so many nice people on at once.

Talkshoe can be very confusing. I have tried to explain the process a little here

Technical glitches aside, FANTASTIC SHOW LAST NIGHT! Randy was a great host, and we had some great guests, including our very own Shego. Anyone who missed it, be sure to download the MP3 and have a listen, and join in next time if you can. If you don't want to or can't do the voice chat, you can still listen in live and do text chat with all of the participants.

So far, Talkshoe has still not posted the recording! This happens from time to time. If it isn't posted tomorrow, I'll put it up somewhere else so you can hear it, it was wonderful to hear those voices (not mine!).

Please try to join us live Wednesday. If you can't, use Twitter to post your questions or post them here, as you like.

If anyone can't make the show but has a question or topic to contribute, please submit it here and we'll try to put it on the air for discussion by the 'panel' (whoever shows up). :)

First off, Talkshoe has posted the recording starring shego, Sara and the others whose names I don't have in my head:

http://tr.im/amtchat should get you to the page. If listening to the recording doesn't work well, you can also download it on the same page.

You should also be able to listen to any recording here: http://randulo.com/TurkersTalk

If there is ever a problem with tr.im or my page, go to the main http://talkshoe.com site and search for "Turker" and you'll find the "Turkers Talk" page. Turkers Talk is about getting YOU to Talk!

For those of you scattered round the world, I'm sorry this is so complicated but in order to phone in free to talk, you will probably need to download one of the free programs called SIP softphones.

Here is a summary of info I've compiled for other pages:

From a regular telephone or cell
    call (425) 406-3649 or call (724) 444-7444 and enter 22603# 1#

    Join the Call using Software

There are several ways to call in using software.
Talkshoe offers a free “Shoephone” for Windows/Mac OS X The Shoephone has free one-button calling plus a text chat feature. Download the Shoephone here.

Free software solutions include X-Lite, the Gizmo Project and SJ Phone.

If you have a paid Skype account, you can use that. Calls are inexpensive, but not free.

I am hoping to connect a Skype account with the Talkshoe bridge. This means that you could call TurkersTalk on Skype FREE and join the conference.

justfight, Talkshoe has experienced troubles with their servers for 48 hours. The shows weren't posted for a long time, then they weren't serving. Usually the recordings is avail one hour or less after the conference and the serving is quick. I may start posting my own local recordings if this continues.

It's critical that these early sessions be available so people can hear what we're trying to do. I am about to post a note for the more tech-geeky out there. Thanks for the comment :)

Randulo, I can set up a page for our listeners to stream or download the audio in case Talkshoe ever has issues again. I'll post a link here once it's up.

The page at http://randulo.com/TurkersTalk contains embed code anyone can copy to their page if you know how. Ergo, certainly you can easily do this! The more copies the merrier.

Next session is Wednesday at 12:30 PM EDT. For the first half hour we'll try to help anyone get online and on the phone. I will begin recording when we have enough people to have a conversation about Mturk. That recording will continue for about an hour, until 2 PM EDT.

Please spread the word about this as it only gets interesting if we get more new people. You'll meet old friends and make new ones. Learn more about Mturk, I do every time I do this.

http://tr.im/amtchat is the page on Talkshoe for "Turkers Talk"

    Follow me on Twitter: @TurkersTalk

IRC: #mturk on irc.Freenode.net I'll will monitor this during sessions and also we can meet there for more extensive text chat than the forum allows, including transcripts when of interest

Shout it out people, it's hard to start things like this without some critical mass. See you on Twitter, IRC, here and everywhere!

I'd love to. Unfortunately, I'm just the help here, not the boss. :) Maybe Andy will be along soon and give it some consideration. In the meantime, I'll see if Stephanie is interested in adding it to her site, either globally or on MTurk-related article pages, and if so I'll help her get it up.

Wow, it's been ages since I've been on IRC. Any decent web-based clients nowadays?

    * Updated thread title with next week's showtime.

If anyone wants to embed the Turkers Talk widget on a site, allowing your visitors to easily listen to episodes, here is the code you need:

    HTML:
    <h4>Wednesdays at 1PM Eastern Time</h4>
    <object width="300" height="150" data="http://widgets.clearspring.com/o/46dff2b521d471ce/46e01640976f216c/46dff2b521d471ce/dc341dfa/masterId/22603/colorId/blue" id="W46e01640976f216c" allowScriptAccess="always" allowNetworking="all" pluginspage="http://www.macromedia.com/go/getflashplayer" type="application/x-shockwave-flash"><param name="wmode" value="transparent" /><param name="movie" value="http://widgets.clearspring.com/o/46dff2b521d471ce/46e01640976f216c/46dff2b521d471ce/dc341dfa/masterId/22603/colorId/blue" /><param name="allowScriptAccess" value="always" /></object>

You can review Turkers Talk on Talkshoe if you are a member: go to http://tr.im/amtchat and find "Who Follows" on the right side of the page. See "Reviews". You can give a rating from 1 to 5 or even write a review. Maybe I should put out a HIT?

As long as you make it clear you want honest reviews and ratings, good or bad, then sure. :)

I did it Saturday. The fact is, and this is common of many things on mturk, the reviewers didn't even really care what the whole thing was about, they just clicked through and did the task for the money. The written reviews, for which I gave a bonus of 15-25c were mostly very lame like "Great, I love this and I think everyone should like it, thanks so much." I gave the bonuses anyway as promised.

What I am saying is, that having worked both sodes of the fence, there seems to be an equal amount of BS on both. I've seen HITs that were ridiculously low priced for the amount of work, but I've also seen things come back to me as a requester that were not worth the money offered. I know that I would never do shabby work, even for a 10c HIT. I might be wrong or make mistakes but if I were to write a review it would be original and meaningful.

Let's be careful about generalizing the evil of requesters, I've now seen plenty of lame results for what I think were generous amounts of money.

I think the HIT asked for only positive reviews (as per my best recollection, it was mentioned in the HIT that negative reviewer's HIT will be rejected), which is quite understandable. However, I don't know exactly whether that means honest or not. :)

BTW, I didn't work on the HIT as I'm no professional reviewer & my review would have been as lame as randulo mentioned above. Hope I did the right thing, randulo :)

Yes, I asked for positive reviews because as I said, "if you can't say anything good..." but reviews were for the bonus. The HIT was for going to rate, which is anonymous. I asked for a 4 or 5 but didn't threaten to not pay for low rating. After all, I can't see how anyone rates the show.

The main reason for that HIT was to attract Turkers to the page. I have enough accounts on Talkshoe to give many positive reviews all by myself if I wanted that.

I don't think anyone here has. We point out the good ones along with the bad. If there is more complaining, it's because 1) it's more natural to talk about problems than non-issues, because problems want solving; and 2) the MTurk system leaves the worker pretty much powerless to fight injustice.

And if you read through more of the posts here, you'll see I rail against bad or cheating workers more strongly than I do anything else, because they ruin things for everybody -- requesters and workers alike. As I was saying to Spamgirl in chat last week, cheating or bad work is a huge problem, and we should definitely talk about it on the show soon. That's one reason I'm particularly eager to get a certain requester on the show. He went through a lot combatting bots, and seems to pretty much have it under control now for his HITs.

I'm a requester and I'm there every time :) I'll be talking about my experiences.

IMPORTANT: I just tested the Skype bridge and it works. It should be working next this Wed and next Wed (the call next week is at 2AM EDT)

To enter the channel please feel free to call TurkersTalk on Skype but do this ONLY if you can't use the other ways to call in. I will not see who you are thru Skype. You won't need to register with Talkshoe to call that number. Please use it only if you're willing to TALK, not just listen.

Looking forward to hearing about them!

Also, that requester I invited declined, citing that his company wanted to keep their use of MTurk on the down-low since it's their "secret sauce".

Glad to hear the Skype bridge is working. I hope people having troubles will find it solves their problems.
