    Hello all,

I'm a newbie requestor and I was wondering what would be a fair amount of compensation for a HIT that involves filling out a number of surveys and completing a short task. In all, it should take approximately 45 minutes to complete. What do you all think would be a fair amount to compensate for 45 minutes of work on MTurk? Thanks!

Let me turn it around on you.

You are a worker on MTurk.
You do not use MTurk for extra income. MTurk is your sole source of income. (sadly, this is a realty for many Turkers).
You need to Turk enough in a day to keep a roof over your head, food in your belly, and the debt collector calls to a minimum.

When Turking, it all comes down to your hourly wage. Either you do a high number of small jobs for a pittance, or you do a smaller number of more time-consuming tasks for more money. Earning 50 cents for a half hour is not only inefficient, it is an insult. Sure, a task may not be that complicated or require a lot of brain power, but a given person's time is worth less than $1/hr? At that, you are almost guaranteed to have people flash through the task, not reading a dang question aside for skimming for filter questions.

So....ask yourself how much 45 minutes of your time is worth. How much would you charge someone else for 45 minutes of your time? That is how much you should pay.

Yes, honestly you shouldn't be turking as a main source of income, just some extra cash and you're bored. They pay you pennies, on average like the above poster said $1/hour, which is ridiculously below standard. For those of us who strive to put in quality work, I do believe the compensation should be higher. It all depends on demand though. If they need work done more than us needing to complete the work, in theory, the market should force requesters to increase their compensation.

Some people don't have the luxury of a job or "extra" income.

That may be true, but you'll barely be making ends meet turking. I spent a whole day (around I'd say 12 hours) doing HITs and I've made $15, and that's on a good day. IMO, that time is better spent doing something else that may bring in more income.

If you are only making $15 in 12+ hours, you aren't doing it correctly. I can do over $100 in the same amount of time.

How? I'm obviously doing this wrong then. Please explain.

    -Find a HIT.
-Do a sample set. See how many you can do in 10 minutes.
-Take the amount you have earned in the 10 minutes. Multiply this by 6 to calculate your hourly wage.

-If you are earning some paltry sum like $1 or $2 an hour, these HITS are not worth your time. This should go without saying. My personal threshold is minimum wage. I have legitimate non-scam HITS, which are not exclusive, do not require qualification tests or any other bull, which can pay up to $20/hr. No, I'm not telling you what they are. I'm not doing all the work for you.

Ok so lets calculate this. $100 in 12 hours, that's $8.33 an hour, divide that by 60 minutes, and you're making .138 cents for 1 minute of your time. What dream world are you living in? You cannot possibly do this, searching for HITs in itself takes time, and to weed out the illegitimate ones from the legit ones adds on more time. This is easy to prove, and you don't need to show me your actual HITs; just show a screenshot of your HITs history, and show you're making around $100 per day of approved HITs. I would love to see this, and I'll bet you cannot show it. Prove it, or get out. If you can't prove it, then you're obviously trolling.

    A) repeatability. I don't search for new HITS every day. I have a few requesters who I hit up every day.

    B) I don't always do $100. I just said that I had the capability.

Yeah, for short bursts and once in a blue moon. But not for extended periods of time and certainly not on demand.

When you can show me $60 a day for 5 days in a row, then I will be impressed ($8.33 an hour, what your $100 in 12 hours averages out to).

With holiday and family obligations, my Dec daily totals dipped. I averaged around $45/day, ranging from .69 cents to over $100 per day (with 5 days over $100 in the past 45 days). I can either show you Nov, or you can wait until after Jan 1st.

ETA: I also don't keep track of the day-to-day. I keep track of my running average for the month. I might do $20 one day, and $80 the next to make up for the light day. It all depends on my schedule. I don't think I've *ever* had 5 days in a row with a total over $60.

I believe it may be possible to do $100 a day once in a blue moon, but don't give people false hope. Show a screenshot of your average per month. Until then, anything you say doesn't mean a thing.

I’d settle for a screen shot of this page, with the name blanked out.

And you do realize the only reason I'm doing this is that it pisses me off to no end when people like you insist there's no way you can make an actual amount from turking....when really the oly thing holding anyone back is a lack of drive and imagination. If you aren't making real money, you aren't trying hard enough.

    Yoo-hoo.

I'm still waiting for a couple people to eat some humble pie.

Thanks for taking the time to post it. $50 a day average is not bad at all (as long as you didn’t work 12 hour days to get it).

Nah, it doesn't take me anywhere near 12 hours to earn that much. And as I said, December was kind of a slow month, the November daily average was much better. I think with the holidays my fave requesters were not posting as much, leaving me to my 2nd string.

Some of us can not respond as quickly with a busy life. Anyways, yes, you're making $50 a day on average. You may not be spending 12 hours a day, but I bet it's more than a regular 40 hours a week job. Not bad though; I hope many mturk workers are making at least $50 a day.

You were quick enough to jump on me telling me that I could not possibly be making a real amount of money.

As I've said multiple times in this thread, this past month was significantly slower.

I also can't prove to you that I don't spend day and night on MTurk, and I don't really care that you don't believe me. You won't take my advice, it just means more work for me. So all I say to that is: Your loss.
