i felt this way too, even though i probably don't feel more confident about anything like i do my writing... it seemed like i just had no idea what level of quality the requesters were looking for, and to invest that time and effort to get a rejection just wasn't worth it to me. but i started slowly, getting into some article rewrites, which almost all of them are on some level, and i asked questions of the requesters, and i'm actually enjoying the writing hits a lot now. this is in no small part thanks to mr goldsmith and his $1/100 word rate, give or take. but also tyler quick, david matchett, pinnacle media, and i'll probably be trying code white soon too. i've figured out that, at least with these requesters, they're just looking for good grammar, no misspellings, and nothing copied from the original article or elsewhere on the internet. the main goal is for them to pass copyscape so that google doesn't pick up that their articles or blog posts are duplicates, because then google removes them from the rankings, which is website suicide. so i would say, maybe start out slowly, do some of the shorter rewrites when they're around, some requesters have nice time limits, goldsmith's are at least 12 hours nearly every time, and just get a feel for how comfortable you are with them. it also helps when someone posts a bunch of hits on the same topic, because after you do two or three you have a better command of the specialized vocabulary of the industry or subject you're discussing, and you'll have a much better sense of the flow and direction your writing should take from start to finish.

    just my 2 cents...

EDIT: and i haven't tried for the top tier qual yet, but once you get that, a lot of lucrative opportunities open up, even better rates than the goldsmith articles...

Same way I feel about it. Not sure exactly what they want and will approve. I have been thinking about trying the transcription HITS. Ever tried any of those?

They gave me a qual, then e-mailed me the link when they approved the .50 one. Maybe 15 or 30 minutes after I finished it showed up. Keep an eye on your email!

Edit: there's different versions based on what you answered on the first, so there will be multiple 'links'. Just follow the one in your email :)

yeah, i've done some of the shorter claritrans batches, i did the speechink qual but their office got messed up by hurricane sandy and some personal things so i'm still not sure if i passed, and i do others that pop up, the $1 ryan brin ones are super easy and fast. i guess i find transcriptions really annoying but very easy. i don't know how to explain it. i dread them, but i'm happy to do them at the same time.

I don't like doing transcriptions because they require me to turn off my music. Also, there's very limited chances to actually speed the work along.

Has anyone ever worked for textbroker.com? I dread writing tasks as well and haven't even dipped my foot in the water, but I took the qual and passed. They start at $.01/word and after you have 5 approved articles they bump you up to $.013. If you are really good you can get up to $.05.

I have started working on transcription, I am not a fast typer though, I make a lot of typing errors that I need to redo. I managed to get a 98 grade on Speechlink though, it just takes me 40 minutes to transcribe a 4 minute job, LOL! Maybe I will get faster one day.

yeah, i did three 4:25 transcriptions in an hour and fifteen minutes on good quality audio, which to me seems really slow. i think if you intend to do a large volume of them you need the correct setup. i'm not sure i would go as far as foot pedals, but at the very least, software, setting up hotkeys, using the right media player, things like that seem to help a lot.

Yeah you really need to run about 3x to be able to make it worth the time. You'll get faster as you do more though :) One thing that sped me up a lot was not worrying about the obvious typos, because you'll be able to auto correct them on your final read through. So if you type tmie instead of time, just leave it and come back later. It's much more important to keep typing and stay in the flow then to pause and correct.
