I dig The Decemberists, but that "strain" is a totally fair look at what they record. It's fine pretending to be Eliot and to show off your cultural capital, but when you're making an EP about the Táin Bó Cúailnge... At what point is that attempt to appear intellectual getting in the way of making enjoyable music?

I suppose it falls on whether or not you actually believe that they have intellect. A lot of people don't like Okkervil River for essentially the same reasons as are popping up here in your post and Art's, and they're my favorite band.

What IF someone really smart and cultured wanted to be in a band? What if they had weird and esoteric interests? What if writing about them was less effortful than dealing with the people around you in everyday life?

If I'd had a good voice and some friends who wanted to play drums, would people say that I was "appearing" intellectual?

I have interests that are displaced by several centuries. I thought The Decemberists' concept album for The Tain was the worst thing they ever did, and they laid a few rotten eggs over the years (but it wasn't the ambition that I despised)

I have never understood the anti-intellect strand in musical critique. All of the stories that people tell are old. Is it worse to understand this?

I think the wording of my post was poor, as I intended to only point to the Táin album because, as you said, it stunk. I can't really get into a discussion of musical critique beyond the superficial like/dislike because I'm just no good at it. But I think that Táin album was rubbish primarily because of that attempt at forcing that esoteric intellectual interest into a concept album.

Maybe I'm sore because it was such an odd and interesting mashup that pertained to a sort of odd interest of mine. It sucks that it fell flat.

what a good job I'm actually still awake and came back to squee because through a weird long chain of random memories I just happened to remember that Animal Collective exists (way more my thing than Decemberists, sorry; blame an early exposure to Ummagumma) anyway, because

dear boxers person, please post more, and preferably not just after I've gone to bed? because we really should be properly introduced, and you can tell me all about how the Tain thing sucked because I totally agree with you.

best listened to on a sunny day with enough wind to move the clouds across the sky, when you've walked far enough that the mind loosens; however in lieu of that substances will probably do.

I love this song, I can't believe I forgot about it, and I *totally* blame the Russian for reminding me.

    anyway going back to bed.

I think what I enjoy most about this is the description in the Youtube channel. I love the mentality of musicians and how they approach conveying an idea, possibly because I don't understand it in the least.

I notice you guys were talking about music, but it was about The Decemberists and I'm about to go pass out. So I'm just going to post a link to what is the only band I've ever heard that doesn't have a bad song, at least IMO anway. I love everything from Streetlight Manifesto, it's like orchestral punk or something. Also I think I like part of the ending as a signature.

Absolutely. I enjoy discussions of the sort because I haven't had cool musical tastes (or any at all, probably) since I left high school, and the majority of music I end up enjoying these days comes via stumbling upon it in conversations like these. Any time terrible ancient literature like the Tain can come up in music convos is a lucky day for me.

I saw Streetlight Manifesto at a venue the size of a living room about twelve years ago. Fun fun show.
