People being free to express their gender identity in every capacity should not only be tolerated, but encouraged in any manner possible. The unfortunate thing about this situation is that there are plenty of people out there who are capable and willing to think about the cause, to educate themselves, and to try to change the world for the better. You strike me as one of those people. Why is this unfortunate? Because when others aren't as educated on a single subject as those who have studied it and lived it, it is extremely hard to hand out information. That doesn't mean that you shouldn't, of course, but it does mean that in your quest for understanding and betterment, you'll encounter a lot of people who aren't ready yet, or who don't know how to process what you're giving them. For the record, I'm on the side of optional self identification via text box. That would be the only way to accurately represent everyone, in my opinion. You're not a piece of shit, you're a brilliant man with a low tolerance for inequality and bullshit. That is to be commended. Yah, I get it. I actually haven't suffered from it personally I've only been a 2nd or 3rd party to the problem through friends. Which is apparently an issue because apparently it's unholy to talk about inequality when you haven't experienced it, which frankly I think is a load of BS.
