Anybody have experience booting/installing os's on usb (mac specifically)? I became dumb and tried to reinstall os x to wipe it clean and now I can't reinstall it because I didn't create a back-up :/ also trying install Windows 7 too so I can use AHK, but that's being a huge pain too. At the very least, I have linux but I want them ALL om nom nom nom

Well for starters your motherboard has to support that function, booting from USB.

Secondly, you have to create a bootable usb disc.

Then you plug it in and boot and install from USB.

I could never get it to work on mine, and it supports it.

It's complicated to explain but not complicated to do, once you know how.

I also can't figure out how to properly overlock my North Bridge in this shitty, godforsaken, bios interface from hell.

This is a program I used on Windows to make the USB boot disc, but I don't know if it supports Mac.

    It's real simple to use.

Im actually quadbooting my computer. But if you need something to burn your iso to a usb, rufus is a good program. https://rufus.akeo.ie/

Lol you both gave me the same link :p I'm trying WinUSB right now, had to go into the code and edit a line because it gave me a common error that someone made a fix for *crosses fingers*. But yea, it does support booting from usb BUT apple didn't make it easy. That's how I installed ubuntu and mint since my cd drive is shot. Installing Windows is just gonna be trial and error by the looks of it but I'm clueless for reinstalling os x. If I can get a hold of my friend that has a mac, I might be able to get it working but I guess we'll see.

Also, Mist, rufus works for windows and linux which is good enough for me right now :p

Mist is a gamer, so he doesn't fuck around with anything but Windows but glad he could help.

Planning to. I had both mint and os x before i deleted os x. But to be honest, I can do without it. Mint/Windows would be perfectly fine by me

Oh, and WinUSB gave me the same error again (idr if I restarted it after I edited the code) so I'm about to try rufus

Do you know what your doing for bootloader yet? I would recommend grub. Before I got this new laptop that uses UEFI boot, I always ran grub. But depending on what order you install, you might want to have an extra bootable usb so that you can reinstall your bootloader(Depending on what order you install).

Used to have rEFIt which always worked fine for me, I might have to try grub since rEFIt was installed through os x which is now history

If you do go with it, make sure to get grub 2 instead of grub legacy (I think 0.97?) because it recognizes more operating systems by default. Easiest way to get it is through an Ubuntu iso. Most linux distros should have access to it, and all debian based one's for sure. Well, Im out for the night guys.
