Usually nakkikastike is served with potatoes. Either mashed or boiled. If you have any Finnish blood in you, you would know that. There is no other way. No salad. My uncle always said that he gives salad to his cows.
I'm half Finn, so I knew that. I just described it as I'm assuming most people here have no Finnish heritage. I like salads, so I'm adding one.
Never take food advice from old school Finns. There was a European poll, I want to say in 2000- if not around there- where they ranked by EU nation how healthy and how tasty each nations traditional dishes are. Finland finished dead last in both categories.
I occasionally watch finnish dishes on pbs. They usually involve fishies. I love food. I was actually sad I didn’t know the dish you were referring to.
Not surprised. Food has changed a lot since I left. Before it was pretty much meat and potatoes every day. One way or another. Heart disease was rampant. Food you get these days in restaurants have very international flair. In my house we have few traditional dishes that we do around Christmas time. Otherwise it's Italian food as hubby is the cook.
My favorite fish dish is salt cured salmon. Sometimes people refer it to as 'gravlax', but it's totally different if you prepare it at home.
I bought gravlax once from “kroger” but it was so salty i couldnt eat it. I prefer raw salmon thats fresh.
Really? I've never seen Finnish food on tv. Are you i Fla? I can see the PBS channel there having some Finnish recipes. (There are a ton of Finns in the palm beach area.) I'm not a fan of seafood myself, if you ever get a chance try Karjalanpiirakka (Karelian pie) with egg butter on it. That's my favorite, well and also lettu's (a crepe like dollar pancake).
I bought it too from Publix. It was not good. They put so much salt because it has to keep for a long time. When it's done home, it' will be good for 48 hours at most. You cure it with salt and sugar mixture. I like to splash it with some vodka too. Top with dill.
Honestly the finnish thingy ive seen is some guy cooking fish n talking about the country. Lovely shots of the land and incorporates plants n what not. But it's all quite natural n stuff. I am in indiana. I love food. So i try to pay attention. But, i am old n miss things.
