So they have quantum computers? Or is there some secret patented "completely random" algorithm that they have that nobody knows about, but everyone here knows to exist? Last I checked.. there's no such thing as a completely random algorithm that works on typical CPUs. Further, let's assume Amazon could choose any number of ways to select Masters. There are 2 groups of options: 1. Have specific criteria, you're entered into a lottery, people are chosen "at random" 2. Not 1. In 1. - there's only one way they can do that. In 2. - there's, if not quite an infinite amount of ways, there are dozens of criteria for turkers they can look at, and "a lot" of ways to weight and score those criteria. Turker A does 1,000 HITs a week with 99.9% accuracy, we're putting him in the X bracket - from this group, 40% of Masters are chosen, even though only 10% of turkers are in X bracket. And so on. It's really not complex to do. Even if the weights were more subtle, it'd be impossible to know whether/not Amazon weighs, and to what extent. Furthermore, nobody seems willing to share stats and compare notes. Taking HIT DBs from 50 Masters and 50 non-Masters with "similar" stats, and 50 random non-Masters.. well, it's not a great sample but it'd be better than nothing. Even then, you'd need a decent amount of samples to confirm it, even if it's stat sig that it's not "random", or that it is random. TL;DR, there's no way to know with 100% certainty how they do their algo, but it's more likely than not that they weigh it or otherwise use criteria beyond some mundane "these people did 5,000 HITs and 99% accuracy, pick a few of them out the hat and give them Masters).
It's one of the main reasons I'm a night owl. I've learned to function on less sleep just so I can have quiet time.

there's probably a lot that goes into masters that we don't know about,and not even talking quality stuff I wouldn't be surprised if there was some sort of location bias for example(aside from the US thing,for all we know that have certain quotas for various states or whatever)
damn, just got an email from Kenta. I wrote to them to say that I didn't want them to make their hits 'Masters only'. and this is what they sent back. Hi, Thank you for your message. I just tried to change the qualification this morning to find out how it could improve the quality of a summary. I would say that the difference in qualities between masters and non-masters is very small and that I WILL reverse the condition. I appreciate your contribution to my tasks! People that have masters seem to evolve into an attitude of "there must be a more specialized criteria to getting masters", because they want to think they are a better or more efficient worker then the people that don't have masters. People that don't have masters seem to think that it is totally random, can't possibly be a specialized criteria because i'm a quality worker too. Its a lose lose argument, unless some of us have physical proof of the selection criteria. Just my opinion of course. I used to think I had a guess about it, but my idea was proven wrong by the HITs I put up. Its not 5000/99% as I once believed. More to it then that. What it is exactly, I have no idea. And I don't care either way.
I caught some non-masters Kenta's this morning and they approved within hours. They must have been part of his test batch.

Thank you! I'm West Coast so I have to get up early to catch good surveys and batches. I used to wake up at 4, but since it's summer time I've gotten away with waking up at 5 or 6 and still managing to make a decent amount before the morning is over.
