I've been doing the medical school transcriptions mostly and I decided to try a Casting Words transcription today. I haven't transcribed an interview with two people before and was wondering if it was necessary to transcribe when the interviewer repeats "mm-hmm" throughout the interview.
No. Woman 1: I went to the store on Thursday to get milk. Woman 2: Mm-hmm. Woman 1: While I was there, I saw Tracy. She told me that Luke was a jerk. Woman 2: Yeah. Woman 1: I don't want to run into her again. Woman 2: OK. Do you run into her often, usually? can be Woman 1: I went to the store on Thursday to get milk. While I was there, I saw Tracy. Some interviewers do a lot of "uh huh" "mm-hmm" "yeah" throughout the answers of the interviewee. I try to keep them out of the transcription, when possible.
No, these are not verbatim like medical or insurance transcripts. You almost never use MMMs, Hmmms, you know, etc. Make sure and read the style guide. They want an accurate transcript, but leave out fillers words and false starts. You can also see your edited transcripts on their website. Sometimes it takes a day or two for them to show up, so be patient. Also, don't take your edited transcript as being 100 percent right. We do have some rogue graders, so if you get graded for the same thing by two different graders, then it's probably good to follow their suggestions. http://turkers.castingwords.com/turkers/index
