I'm surprised that you've gotten rejections from ClariTrans. They're actually one of my go-to requesters, although I've stopped doing many of their 35 second standard paying hits because it takes me so long, about 6-8 minutes (or more) to do them. (I'll still do the "great paying" and "temporarily increased pay rate" HITs that are at that length.) I prefer to nibble off the 10, 15 and 20 second HITs because it feels like I can do them faster, although I probably really can't. (Even doing 10 seconds of transcription still takes me about 2-3 minutes.) My method is to play 5-10 seconds of speech, stop the recording and transcribe it as best I can, then listen to the next 5-10 seconds of speech. When I'm done I go back and listen to the whole clip, stopping to correct errors or the missed "ah", "um", or "you know". I do this again and again until I can get through a whole transcription without seeing a mistake, so by the time I'm done I've listened to the whole clip possibly 3, 5, or more times. I also Google words and names I'm not sure of, which can be frustrating and absolutely increases my time to transcribe, although I did learn what a Hadamard transform was from this technique. How long does it take you to transcribe say, a 2-minute clip? It takes me 25-30 minutes. (As an aside, I did an 11 minute transcription a few days back and it took me over 3 hours before I was satisfied with the thing and turned it in.) My general rule of thumb is that it will take me between 15-20 times the length of a clip to fully transcribe it.
