I know there have been threads about 1099's and 1099k forms, I apologize if I missed anything in those.

I'm wondering if I will receive anything from SpeechInk and if so, when. This is my first year on mturk so I haven't gone through the taxes part. This year I have made $722.51 and most of that was under SpeechInk - well over the $600 range. I can't find any tax info on their website and nothing really helpful on Amazon's website.

I guess what I'm asking is... If you worked for SpeechInk this year, have you received any tax info from them?

Well, what I do, is next to your total earning's it say, "show earning details", that will show your 2012 earnings. I have not rec'd any 1099's yet but even if I don't I just use that figure. Hope that helps you.

Thank you. I may have to do that. I thought that employers had to mail your tax info before January 31st. Granted, there are a few more days left. I'm just anxious to get the dreaded taxes done and SpeechInk is the only info I don't have.

I just called them and I got a recording asking to leave a message. I'll try back later to see if I can get a live person.

No, you won't get anything from SpeechInk. Amazon has to send out the forms now, it is no longer the duty of the requester.

Ok, so now I'm wondering if I will get anything at all. I read about others getting an email from Amazon about $20,000 and 200 hits. I didn't receive this email. It's my understanding that if you don't meet both the 20k AND 200 hits, you wont get anything from them. I'm so confused. I just want to do the right thing. Do I claim it on taxes anyway and list SpeechInk as the employer?

To be honest, I'm not quite sure. I'm leaving it up to a professional to do mine.

This isn't an issue I've had to deal with, but I have read numerous threads on this forum about this during the recent weeks, and I thought the opposite conclusion had been reached.

SpeechInk is not your employer. You are considered an independent contractor. Easy way to generalize it: an employer pays part of your Social Security tax, a independent contractor pays the whole thing. It's really not that hard to figure out but maybe I'm just used to it since I've been self employed part time since 1990 and have held full time jobs working for corporations at the same time.

Yes, you are right, SpeechInk is not my "employer" so to speak. I thought they still had a responsibility to report to the IRS and send me a 1099 form. Am I wrong? Would I not get a 1099 from them if I made over $600 from them in a calendar year?

I never received this email. I guess I need to look up the Form 1099-K and see what that has to say.

This is what the IRS has to say about a 1099K - Since $20,000 has not gone through my Amazon Payments Account, I will not get one of these from them.

You have received this form because you have either:
    (a) accepted payment cards for payments, or (b)
received payments through a third party network that
exceeded $20,000 in gross total reportable transactions
and the aggregate number of those transactions
exceeded 200 for the calendar year. Merchant acquirers
and third party settlement organizations, as payment
settlement entities (PSE), must report the proceeds of
payment card and third party network transactions
made to you on Form 1099-K under Internal Revenue
Code section 6050W. The PSE may have contracted
with an electronic payment facilitator (EPF) or other third
party payer to make payments to you.

The tax law may go a long way in determining the way they decide that lawsuit against crowdflower.
