Anyone got their 1099s yet from CW? I haven't. Wrote them but no answer. I know, they'll get to it. They always do. I'm just making sure that I'm not the only one waiting.
Legally they must be post stamped no later than January 31 You must do a LOT of work for them if they actually bother with taxes etc. I don't see how anyone makes any money doing that. It takes me an hour to transcribe 5 minutes of audio...lol
I haven't received mine yet, either. And as to how to make money, you have to 1) practice and 2) get your PPT up high enough to get access to the expedited transcriptions. Speed comes with practice, as does the skill that gets the PPT up.
However, I do think Casting Words does still send them out. This is from the terms that people who apply for the CW Workshop agree to. Bold mine. Independent Contractor recognizes and understands that it will receive an IRS 1099 statement and related tax statements, and will be required to file corporate and/or individual tax returns and to pay taxes in accordance with all provisions of applicable Federal and State law. I also was asked to fill out a W9 last year. Not that any of that says that CW isn't going to start treating their Mturk workers and their workshop workers differently, but keeping tax forms separate would add a layer of complexity to their operation.
I have it confirmed that CW will not be sending any 1099s to Turkers because of the new 6050W regs. I am guessing that they won't send to Workshoppers, either, because it's paid through Paypal, which is covered under 6050W just the way that Amazon Payments is. But, I can find out.
Confirmed: they will be sending 1099s to Workshoppers who earned over $600 in 2012 (although since the Workshop just began, I doubt anyone did). Thus far, they plan to do it next year, too...but like I said, Paypal should be covered under 6050W also, so I suspect they'll change that before next January rolls around.
This is an excerpt from an attorney website regarding the "change" in mTurk policies for the 2012 tax season: The $599 threshold is the limit where the payer (requester) must send paperwork to you and to the IRS. But if you made a total of $ 400 for self employment (total from ALL payers), you are supposed to self report it on a tax return. Mturk didn't really change their policy, they just now lead you to the IRS so they are not held liable if you don't report income. Since the IRS has no report of your earnings unless you made more than $599 per requester and are 1099'ed, very few people report this income.
