I started to do some minor turking but am receiving unemployment compensation. Do I have to report these earnings? Or can I just see if it will slide
You could get away with it because it's not reported unless you ever get a 1099 from them, then you are screeeewwweeeddd.
You will get a 1099 if you make $600 or more and if you dont report it as income now you will be screwed.
You can calculate your own weekly and maximum amount of benefits to see how much you are potentially eligible to receive.
I think if you have earning that reached to taxable income than surely you have to reported for that.Otherwise you can collect your unemployment without reporting tax department.Because i have an online job few months ago and i don't report for income and i got fined for that.
The odds of you making enough on mturk to be required to claim the income is slim to none. The IRS website has all the answers you need. If you can't find anything specific to unemployment compensation concerns, call the unemployment office and ask. I've been doing a LOT of research and you'd be surprised what you can find out. I anticipate a huge lawsuit in the near future of amazon and basically every requester who posts work there since the IRS and ONLY the IRS can determine who is and isn't an employee or contractor. You should check it out. Very enlightening!
Woe, do NOT mess with unemployment! If you're making a few pennies here and there, you can let it slide. But if you start making some serious bank (we're talking well over $100 a month), don't take the chance of being seen as committing fraud by not letting it know what you're doing. Unemployment sees anything that you do for money as "working"-- at least that's how it is in New York State (where I'm from). I think most states are really strict when it comes to reporting income; one woman famously had her benefits slashed when she mentioned she had gotten a one-time $100 check from Google Adsense. So yes, online income is considered "working." I personally would call up your local unemployment office to ask about this. Don't say that you "turk", just make pretend that you're contemplating working online and ask what to do in that case. Then follow UL's advice. If UL says, "Yes, you have to report this as work," what you can do is limit your turking to 1-2 days out of the week as "work" and claim benefits for the remaining three days. Yes, you'll get a reduction in weekly benefits from UL but at least you'll be doing everything legit.
Can you? Yes, AMT will do nothing to stop you. Should you? No, it is dishonest, if not fraudulent. Will you get caught? Sooner or later.
