Late 70s was the best. Hagler, Leonard, Hearns, etc.etc.. I was a big fan of a boxer that died too young, "Salvador Sanchez". He beat the shit out of "Wilfredo Gomez" who before their fight had 32 knockouts in a row. The hot featherweight at the time was Danny "Little Red" Lopez. Sanchez TKO'd him twice. I miss that era.
That was a great era wish I had been alive then. Though I mean you can't discount the late 60s and early 70s heavyweight division with Ali, Frasier, and Foreman. Favorite boxer though, even though I'm obviously not old enough to see him live, Willie Pep that's what defense is supposed to look like. Also don't discount the 80s with Sweet Pea. There have been some awesome eras. Sadly I haven't been alive for most of them.
Sweet Pea got robbed in a fight against Julio Cesar Chavez who was an incredible fighter in his day. Chavez was 87-0 and they declared the fight a draw. Sadly there was never a rematch.
That was one of the greatest travesties in boxing. I watched vidoes of it on youtube and there was a clear winner. That is sadly one of the problem with boxing so many bad decisions. Worst I remember actually watching live was Pac vs Bradley 1.
They should chain the fighters together by their ankles by a 2 or 3 foot chain that would make boxing watchable.
I should just watch more sumo. Much more intense matches for a lot of the fights. Only wish the fights were longer.
having some Bojangles chicken supreme's, buttermilk biscuits, seasoned fries and southern tea... MMMmmmmmm
Mmmmmm. Almost as good as a peanut butter sandwich. One of my favorite things about B'jangles is that they serve delicious greasy breakfast biscuits ALL DAY LONG! So good.
Tyson was a heavyweight, but I think you just proved why boxing is such a dying sport. With Tyson, you knew he was the best fighter in the world, there was nobody who could touch him (until Buster Douglas came along). Now, the marquee matchups are welterweight or non-heavyweight bouts. You know these guys may not be the "best" fighters in the world. I miss the old heavyweight days of boxing; I was a young child, early teenager when I caught the end of that era of boxing. The sport is dead I.M.O. now, sadly.
There's a lot of things that contribute to the death of boxing. One is the bullshit way things are being handled now with people getting to remain champion and choosing who they fight. I mean seriously Mayweather and Pac both got to keep belts at the welterweight division while refusing to fight each other. In the heavyweight division Klitschos refuse to fight. There's also just how few fights there are now with top boxers fighting twice a year. Was a lot better I'm guessing during the age of Sugar Ray Robinson and Willie Pep where people were fighting all the time averaging little under a fight a month.
I dont think its as dead as much as people just dont really give a shit about it. All the fights that people want to see, like tonight are such productions that neither fighter really wants to fight until they can pull a half a billion dollars to do it. Then they both just dance around and half-ass it until the paycheck comes in. This fight really seemed to me like prelude to Mayweather/Pacman II. To me he didnt win it so much as he did not lose it. There are plenty of good fighters out there, there are just so many meaningless belts and titles and rankings and people have shifted to MMA, Boxing has lost its luster because a mediocre fighter can work his way up to a title by fighting losers and then win a meaningless title and then hold onto it for years by fighting other losers.
