Whats the process like timewise? Once you find the one you want; how long after application could you take it home?

I have, the local SPCA. Walked in, looked around, saw the animal my daughter liked. Took it into a visitation room, played with it, decided that it would work out ok. Filled out the forms, cut the check then drove home with new kitty. It was 90.00 or so, which included it being fixed, meds for post surgery and a free vet visit. Thanks for looking at adopting vs going to a breeder and paying a ton of money for a pet. Paperwork took 10 to 15 minutes. This was SPCA. There is a dog shelter near us that is popular but for them you take the pet for walks first, see how it does, then do overnighters before taking ownership. Not sure if they do that for cats. SPCA isn't like that, at least not here.
All shelters vary. MOST will let you take them home the same day. The only caveat to that is if they are not yet neutered/spayed, then you will have to pick them up later. I do a lot of rescue work, and all of them have their own rules -- Thank you for choosing to adopt!!!
We got kittens that weren't fixed yet. We went there and picked them out and paid the fee and had to wait a few days, less than a week, to go pick them up because they had to get fixed and shots.
the demandgen scientist hits. really annoying to keep track of what i was making due to convoluted bonus structure, but he paid the correct bonuses to the penny within a day of the previous batch dying.
It took a few hours...But it was busy that day...But it was pretty painless. Picked out a dog, waited in line, filled out some paperwork, gave them some monies, and took the dog home right after it was done.
Thanks for the responses guys. I want to go pick out a dog (which I've never had) so I'm pretty excited
Back to my average goal this week. Happy about it! This week will probably be less because I have lots of stuff planned, and my mom is giving me work to do. (And at a guaranteed $10/hr, it's better than waiting around for good batches. ) The following is a summary of activity for your Mechanical Turk account for the week ending Jul 27, 2013. Here they all fix immediately. Maybe for the young ones only but it's required. You can score some cool pets, too. The cat we picked out is a Bengal. Pretty chill, very interesting looking but has the most lethal claws I've ever seen. She's 10# and isn't a year old yet. Loves dogs and chased one away the other day. :\
Many times. The last time took a week and a half. The first week they had to sit there in case their owner came back to claim them. Then a few days to get them spayed and neutered, I wasn't allowed to adopt them without them being fixed first. I think it's much quicker if the animals been there awhile already.

Wish I Could do more, but I work FT.
I think most of our shelters here are kill shelters so they don't put the time into fixing them until they are adopted out. We have a lot of rescues here who find foster homes and all that because our shelters are ridiculous overflowed. I got both of my dogs from people who didn't want them too. It's sad. My little babies.
so Im getting a rice cooker soon, might be a dumb question, but can you cook chicken/steak/othermeats in one of those things?
