I got an email this morning notifying me that someone was trying to get into my account. My question is...what would anyone benefit from getting into a forum account and should I be worried about anything else being compromised? Has this happened to anyone else? This is the exact email I got. Person's ip and all. Dear Lissabones, Someone has tried to log into your account on Mturk Forum with an incorrect password at least 5 times. This person has been prevented from attempting to login to your account for the next 15 minutes. The person trying to log into your account had the following IP address: 178.175.128.50 All the best, Mturk Forum
Looks like someone from the Republic of Moldova really wants to get into your Mturk account. And a bunch of other people's stuff too. You may want to secure your important things.. https://stopforumspam.com/ipcheck/178.175.128.50
One of the main reasons for these types of attacks I'm guessing is they are going after a more vulnerable target and hoping you reuse your passwords for multiple things. So most sites will lock you out after a number of failed attempts to log in and might require a second type of authentication to log back in. They might figure this forum does not have such safeguards in place, have no idea whether it does or doesn't, and by finding your password here they can attempt to use that to log into higher level accounts like your email with the eventual goal potentially being to try to get into your bank account.
Nothing to do with your other accounts, there are bots written that mine vB pw's for the purpose of spamming backlinks for seo and looks like members on this board got targetted
