I may have gotten a similar "interesting piece" of mail, last week, but I didn't think it was about turking. I thought it was about a 1099 job I did last year that apparently wasn't filed properly. But now I'm worried...
Well at least in my case: I received a letter from the tax department of my state wondering if I operated a business due to a tax write off I put on my taxes last year, and if so I needed provide proof of business licensure. I never owned a business, and I bought an iPad and also used my personal cell phone quite frequently and wrote off those expenses- for a 1099 job I had last year. I'm not too worried about it though because I can verify all of that and had an actual accountant prepare my taxes last year. But it is weird if another turker in another state got a similar letter to the same effect. This job had nothing to do with turking and I only worked it for a few months.
Have you kept up with all of your quarterly IRS payments on your mturk income? Or have you paid it all at once at the beginning of the year? You would get a notice if you miss a quarterly payment.
It may be because of how I filed turk income, but I'm being prompted to get a license ($40) and pay a business tax of $0.0020 / $1,000.00... Tax of less than a penny if I'm reading correctly.
Did you have your amazon payments account haulted earlier in the summer? Wondering if the amazon payments problem is tax related? I know of one person who still hasn't got their account opened back up after sending in every document that was requested.
Originally had verification issue in November '14, but sent fax of drivers license and it was resolved. No issues since.
This is a very concise interpretation of the situation. Any ideas about how to fix it? Evidently the Masters qual is becoming less sacrosanct, and as a result work is more and more devalued. So what's next?
There is already a tax thread. It's sticky. http://mturkforum.com/showthread.php?32696-Tax-question&p=1128306&viewfull=1#post1128306
