Yes! My kiddo had it on his Kindle Fire first, then Pocket Version on his iPhone. The main reason he wanted the PC version was because it had Red Stone, but now the Pocket Version has that as well. So maybe just playing it on an ipad or something would work for her? (yes, we purchased that stinking game in 3 different forms lol)
If you can get Java installed you should be able to install it without issue, there are steps to installing java I just don't remember them right now. I have a family member that swears by their chromebook and has caused me more headaches than I can count.
Minecraft is kind of hefty. But you can grab it from here - https://minecraft.net/ Costs $26.95. No subscription. I think I got it on sale or something...I paid via Paypal. OH it might've been the currency conversion or something. It came out cheaper that way. Also uhhhh, if you want something LIKE Minecraft (but 2D with more adventure elements) that's less resource intensive, try Terraria - http://store.steampowered.com/app/105600/ Another option - My brother has it on the iPad for his kiddos. Runs really well there but I don't know if it's the same as the PC version or what.
ChromeOS isn't shitty, just limited. Think of Chromebooks as tablets in a laptop form factor. They're cheap, low maintenance, have good battery life, and are small and light. For email, media, web surfing, Google docs they're pretty useful.
People still play minecraft? I logged a good 20 hours into that game just building one thing. Shortly after that I realized I didn't build my house right and it was crooked looking. I haven't played since.

Eh, I got by for a long time on a mid-tier PC running onboard graphics. Unless you're running a lot of mods, Optifine+vanilla Minecraft isn't terrible on a normal machine. They've optimized the game somewhat recently, although that may be in the snapshots and not subject to official release yet, I forget. Yeah, it's almost essential if you're running and/or creating mods. I've played around with writing a few mods, it's a lot of fun since you can make things that don't require the effort and knowledge of creating a whole game, but still be able to fool around a bit and have something you can put into the game. It's a good way to learn programming.

When I had a chromebook, I just gave up and ran all of my apps in the browser. Browser-based FTP, SSH, text editors. I think the terminal was even a browser-based emulator. Fun times.
Returning this at :50 'cause I already did it in November. Get your pandas going if you haven't done it! EDIT: Returned
Sounds like me. 30 minutes trying to build a tiny fucking wall and I was done. But it's a neat game and I'm always jealous of people who work on massive builds. Then again, they spend way too much fucking time on that shit. You seen the Minecraft pixel art yet? Whaaat? Timelapse video here - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zWHQD-mEnYM
That would be me. I'd spend a bunch of time building something, realize that it was crooked, and then get grumpy and be like "Fuck this game. This game is stupid and everybody who likes it is also stupid. " I would have loved it when I was 12 or 13, but adult-me doesn't have the patience or the frustration tolerance to play that game, lol.
