Today there's an editor working that I haven't seen very often. They're not afraid to give out 9s, or an 8 with an explanation. They must be a more senior editor because their grade sticks. And if you're that editor, thank you. _____________ Small rant. I did an Improve HIT today. I'm wondering if 13 and 21 minute audio clips have always been available to new workers? The pay is better, but the work can be awful. One, no speaker tokens. Another - just caught the jist most of the time. That one took me a long time to try and bring to a 9. The no speaker token one - didn't do because it's hard to hear the child most of the time. The improve jobs really are my favorite. I'm going to have to keep to smaller ones for a while though. That long one today fried my brain a little bit with all the 'and, so but' stuff to take care of.
CW acknowledged my complaint, confirming that I hyphenated correctly. (I'm still hoping for a re-grade from 8 to 9.)
No luck on the re-grade, but that's ok. I now concentrate on the shortest and easiest transcripts. With just a few seconds of perfectly clear audio, it should be almost impossible to make any substantial mistakes. Yet still the 8's will continue rolling in. This is my fate, and I embrace it.
I'm sorry. It sucks. I'm stuck doing Improve jobs. I can't fight with my laptop anymore. No fight left. I just need to keep making money. Back to school is coming up and every little bit helps. I'm grateful they aren't teenagers yet.
In the same boat Whimsy on the school front, mine are 5 and 8 and growing fast, it's hard to keep up with their wardrobe requirements. I can't even cash out so I am working to fulfil my eldest's dream of a Kindle for Christmas. Maybe one for me, too
I've tried to take this attitude, but it's getting harder. I'm losing money because of this. Why don't the grades stick?? In one transcript alone, I lost $1.60 because of this. I was graded a 9, the final transcript showed only 3 changes out of a 13 minute chunk, and I got paid for an 8. Insert hair-pulling smiley here.
I read the other thread but I'll post here =) Yup, 7 cents sucks but I don't think you have to listen to the entire audio, especially since you aren't able to do the edits. I do usually listen to the whole thing, but sometimes I know right away if it's going to be a 7 or 8 -- or lower. Sometimes you get lucky and it's all perfect. I don't think of it as a money maker - I think of it as putting in dues. Editing has raised my Edit score up to 4. At 5 I qualify for another task. That may pay crap though. IDK. I just like having all the options available to me. Congrats on the 9s, pwt =) Some of my stuff that came through this morning had 50/50 9s so I'm happy. On another note...lol I was looking at the details for one of my transcriptions that got a 9. One of the graders gave me a 7! "some words not transcribed and there aren't supposed to be spaces between ellipses" was their feedback. ARGH!!! Really? Two other graders gave me a 9. I'll try to fix the ellipses thing today. That's an autocorrect thing that I should be able to change easily. Hadn't really noticed before. Have to check the style guide again, too. I'm wondering if they were grading with a verbatim ear? There have been a couple of jobs lately where someone has an almost full sentence before completely changing direction. If it can't be worked in, I take it out. My PPT went up, too
That's a really good idea. Sometimes I get so caught up on "just doing this" that I forget about all the other stuff available -- even though I read about it in the other threads lol
I am probably putting too much into the review by the sound of it. I listen to the entire thing and note every error in the comments!
I group the mistakes. Filler words not taken out. Long paragraphs. Run-on sentences. Mis-used speaker token(s). Essential speech not transcribed. (as opposed to filler words that don't add anything, words that enrich, change, whatever is being said) Mis-transcribed words (give example) That's just what I do. I haven't done a lot of those, but do them to get a feel for it and hopefully see things that teach me how to do better on my own transcriptions.
Why? As long as what's done is fair (theoretically speaking, sometimes 8s suck rocks) there isn't any issue. Plus, it's mostly anonymous. Mostly because sometimes I'll post things that identify me pretty well.
Although, to be fair, I am always letting my fingers away with me and typing 'an' as 'and' - spell check no use there either!
