I'm having a dull moment, well maybe confused moment. I'm trying to start the pump and filter on the pool. I was used to a sand filter and this is a cartridge so a bit different. I turned the valves on the pvc pipes to go in the direction of the pipes which should be on (flowing) but the filter wouldn't prime. Not until I turned the valves in opposite direction from the way the pipes run which I thought was off did the filter prime. My question is this--Was I correct that the valve position for ON is in the direction of the piping? And why wouldn't it allow water to flow into the filter if that is correct? Vacuum situation maybe. And I understand this isn't pool school forum but these are basic plumbing and engineering questions and several people on here have experience.
