I did a HIT on 8/21 for Stephanie Wilmore for $1. I did what was requested, and she rejected it. She subsequently put the same HIT up for a penny. I did it to see if it was the same, it was, and she paid it. She did not respond to my request to be paid, which I should since it was her error.

I complained to Amazon, and here is their reply:

    "Hello Kevin,

Thank you for contacting Mechanical Turk. I apologize the a HIT you completed was rejected by the Requester. *Our policy is not to interfere in disputes between Workers and Requesters, and as stated on our site, all approvals and rejections are at the sole discretion of the Requester. If you feel a Requester has unfairly rejected a HIT, I would suggest you contact them to see if you can work something out.

To work this out with the Requester, you can contact the Requester through your Dashboard (https://www.mturk.com/mturk/dashboard) by clicking the date you worked on this HIT and then clicking on the Requester's name. After you have sent your message, you may need to wait a few days for a reply. Some Requesters do not monitor their messages every day.

I also recommend looking over some of the available 3rd party browser plug-ins that have been created for Mechanical Turk. Some of these plug-ins allow you rate and review Requesters and see other Workers reviews while completing HITs on Mechanical Turk.

I hope this helps. Thank you for participating in Mechanical Turk.

Thank you for your inquiry. Did I solve your problem?

    Best regards,

    Laura S.
    Amazon Mechanical Turk"

It's a bogus position to take, because Amazon contacted me about two weeks ago to tell me that a Requester complained about my work. But they didn't provide enough detail to figure out WHY someone took issue with my work.

So the lesson is that Amazon doesn't provide the resources to help you. Don't ask.

I think the important thing to think about here is everyone on mturk has had rejections they don't approve of whether idiotic scamming requesters or whether by mistake, the important thing is too keep moving on and not dwell on a single rejection, perhaps use more caution when going for higher paying jobs but don't let it bite you on your ass forever.

Amazon never has. Maybe they will in the future but...they don't care- They kind of let the requesters rule everything here. They should ban requesters who have tons of bad ratings but they never do.... THey don't even check HITS before they go up. This is kind of a free market here and requesters get to kind of do whatever they want, lol. It is not like Elance and such sites etc where you can rate people and they hold the money to pay you so the employer can't just not pay you.
Amazon doesn't care for the workers at all- Which is why you can get blocked for any reason or no reason at all and then get banned from Mturk after 3 blocks. It is how it is on Mturk- They have no rating system even- Turkopticon is not a part of amazon at all- Amazon has never cared. They protect requesters no matter how bad they are- even if they scam people.
This system can't last forever like this- I think Amazon will have to change things soon to protect workers as well so they don't get shut down or problems from outside government agencies.

They've been getting away with their 'anything goes' behavior for years now, and as far as I can tell, there has yet to be any outside pressure on them to change things, and there isn't going to be. No government agency is interested in preventing turkers from being mistreated.

OK, here's the thing - between what you've said here in this thread - and in this thread -
    http://mturkforum.com/showthread.php?3279-Yuan-Hou-is-incompetent-and-or-dishonest

I believe you're overreacting and while you may be spot-on for this requester screwing up and giving you a rejection instead of paying for their mistake...

You need to chill, dude. If you don't, you'll burn out quickly. You're going to get screwed out of money, you're going to get wrongfully rejected, you're going to be taken advantage of UNLESS you chill and read a bit more and try to learn from others. Then it will just be a less often occurrence.

NO MMO SITE IS PERFECT. You just have to decide what you're willing to accept.

I did a the same HIT and got rejected too; I even pasted the link of the page I clicked on in her comments box. My guess is she messed up the compensation. There is a reason she has bad reviews on TO. My bad for not checking TO before I accepted the HIT, won't be doing any of her HITs again.

Kansley I just checked all your past posts- and I do have to agree with the others...you do need to chill You can't say requesters are bad when they haven't paid you for 10 days- They have 30 days to pay you. All you post is some things that are bad about requesters and a lot of times you are in the wrong. You will burn out quickly with all the anger. Especially if you are getting angry for all the wrong reasons. Stick with good requesters and follow the rules for the HIT. And remember they have 30 days to pay you.

That is usually a newbie requester mistake. They think "Greater than 99%" means 99.1%, 99.2%, and so on when AMT bases qualifications on whole numbers. And although your dashboard might say 100% because the dashboard rounds up, the qualification uses your actual percentage. Times like that, I contact the requester to let them know that pretty much the only people that can do their HITs are newbs in their 10 day initiation period. Most of the time it gets changed fairly quickly :p

I think the Workers ought to stand up for themselves. No wonder Amazon doesn't help us.

How are we suppose to stand up ? I think blogs warning each other about bad requesters is as far as it's going to get. If you email amazon you'll just get an automated response.

Stand up for yourself by NOT WORKING FOR KNOWN SCAMMERS OR NEW REQUESTERS. At least don't throw yourself in completely without testing the waters first. 1 or 2 rejections from a new requester won't hurt you, but doing 500 HITs for a requester no one has heard of just because they pay $30/hour is not smart. If you can contact the requester and find out approval/rejection policy, it might be a different story (unless they say it's majority rules -- then run away fast!). If you do a couple HITs for a new requester, try to keep proof of your work if possible. I don't do this, but at least you'll be able to SHOW other people that you were scammed and spread the word properly. And do it -- post it on forums, review them on TO, send them a message. Hell -- send a copy to Amazon too, couldn't hurt. But don't spend the rest of your life trying to bring them down. They will just open a new account in a new name with a new credit card and you'll have to start all over again. Your time would be better spent making the honest requesters appreciate us more.
