I think it's largely personal preference, but it also should be (in my opinion) somewhat determined by how cold it is outside. That's how I think of climate control, anyway. "Oh, it's 60 in here. That sounds great compared to the -5 outside right now." I don't really get the people who aim for 70f year round, regardless of the season. I think it makes one soft.
We lost power a couple of years ago for two weeks because of a blizzard and the trucks couldn't get to the line to fix it... it's amazing that the 10 degrees that it was warmer in the house was so much nicer than being outside.
I was in Miami in early 2010 where it got in the mid 30's. CNN was there, I remember. Because we walked past one of their news crews and went into this sushi joint and they had CNN on, and some person who talked like they were from Ohio was there with a microphone saying "Yes Tom it sure is cold!" I dunno. I am only vaguely aware of where the furnace even is (it is in the very small room where the laundrystuff is)

Did you have no heat at all? Or at least a fireplace? Similar story, I went away for a week recently. I turned the heat off before I left because there wasn't any extreme cold in the forecast. Well, we got slammed with all the winter and it was 37f inside my house when I got home. It felt great compared to the 5f outside with wind chills well below zero.
