I hate Columbus day not even because he was a horrible human being but because he was utterly incompetent and for some reason he is made out to be brilliant. He did not prove the world was round that was known since at least the ancient Greeks. The reason everyone shot down his plan of getting to India by way of the Atlantic wasn't because they thought he would fall off the earth but because it was totally mathematically in feasible at the time. Yeah the Greeks had an incredibly accurate measure of the earth which if I remember right was standard use at the time. Columbus decides to use a later Muslim estimation of the size of the earth, which was in fact a better estimation, but in so doing he forgot to convert from the Arabic mile to the common Nautical mile getting a discrepancy of 25+%. He also incorrectly guessed the size of the Eurasian landmass again something his contemporaries already had estimates for. He simply got very lucky that there happened to be a North American continent or his entire crew would have died trying to reach China/India. Also even if we neglect the mathematical proof of the roundness of Earth Columbus's journey "proves" nothing since he didn't circumnavigate the globe. First person to circumnavigate was Magellan's crew, not accurate to say Magellan himself as he died in the Philippines.
