The first ranged/not ranged hump is hard to get over. They actually do terrible damage, but you have terrible armor, so it balances out. The game really starts to shine when you get into the early-mid game, with a few cavalry that you can use, and a few archers, and you in front of them all acting like a gorram hero, too good looking to die. The thing is it's hard to get enough money to get over the early game hump, generally. What I recommend is chatting up Lords and saying "hey bro I mean Lord, you got things for me to do?" One of them will say "collect thousands of coins worth of taxes and then bring them to me" and then you say "lol k". Then collect the taxes. After that, maybe you don't talk to the guy for a year or two.
