I feel like if we controlled for drug addiction, mental illness, and poverty, this forum would have the same turnover as anywhere else. But who would survive a purge like that?
ahh the smoking survey is upsetting to me. both my folks smoked when I was growing up to the tune of about 4 cartons a week. I with 100% certainty they recieved food stamps for food... yet were forking out $60/week yet couldn't 'afford that' <--- my mom favorite fking phrase. Makes me so angry... btw I used a very generous $1.50/pack for that $60 a week. Cost was probably a lot higher. Also add in a case or two of booze a month... RAEG
I do something called the Christmas lab where my chemistry class makes peanut brittle. That's right, 26 16 year old girls with hot plates. My biggest fear is that when it boils over that it creates so much smoke it sets off the school sprinklers and fire alarm. No pressure but very delicious.
While he could certainly afford it monetarily, my father certainly couldn't afford it health-wise. Heart attacks, stroke, and then finally lung cancer. He smoked to the end. Died about a year ago, within 3 months of lung cancer diagnosis. Nicotine is a helluva drug.

You have sprinklers in the science classrooms? We literally lit methane bubbles on fire ALL THE TIME and shot out ceiling tiles with gases put into water cooler bottles and such. Weekly. Mr. Daugherty was kind of an institution though, one of the few truly good teachers we had.
Thanks for the smoking survey. I had an unexpected rough day that stopped me from turking early. So that put me up over 10 dollars.
It really is because of mturk. You either get it after a few months or quit, when new members join, or get good at it and realize that forums are a hindrance to time optimized for earning, so people spend less and less time until one day they just stop logging in. (Other forums focused on more conventional hobbies and interests retain members for the duration they remain interested, which can be a lifetime)
I have no children and average about 10k a year after taxes. Luckily, booze is cheaper than cigarettes.
