It is random speculation right now. People are investing in high risk hopefully high reward commodities. Doubt anyone is investing a significant amount of money in terms of how much money they have. Its basically money that they are willing to gamble away.

Cryptocurrencies have a tendency to blow up and gain value in multiples of ten, if not more, even if they eventually die out and are useless. "Let's make a new cryptocurrency, magnify its value, and then loot it before people realize what's going on" is a legitimate business strategy that can make people millions. Sounds like Stellar isn't a cryptocurrency so much as an attempt to create an exchange currency, though?
