I quit today at $37 because that's all I needed to make today. But I was struggling to get anywhere near that until right before Christmas. It seemed to happen all at once for me -- a combination of having enough accepted HITs to be able to take some chances about rejections, having 5,000 then 10,000 HITs so I have access to more HITs, and knowing what I like, what I'm good at, and what requesters I like to work with. Have patience. And keep trying. And keep going after quals and looking for requesters you "mesh" with. Most of all, don't sweat it if you miss a good HIT (PandA it). Don't sweat it if you don't have the qual everybody else made bank on that day (you'll rack up your own valuable quals soon enough). Just keep plugging away at it, and you'll see results.
everyone was in your place once, don't let our numbers discourage you. I've been doing this for over year and a half and just passed 200k hits, and I still learn new stuff and find new requesters to work on every day. all I can suggest is to keep up with the forum, people post some great hits on here. and try to get your hit count up, it will qualify you for more HITs and will create a buffer to keep a good approval rate in case anything gets rejected. once more work is available to you, you get more qualifications, and just get a better feel for what requesters are worth working on, your daily goal will keep going up.
