I thought that if they were approved they are going to pay... that the only reason there was a difference between "approved-pending payment" and "paid" was because MTurk only adds to your payments account at certain times during the day. Can anyone clarify this?

Well I don't know about the rest of y'all, but I was up until crack:30 doing Franklin HITs.
