The weird thing is that when I first got it fixed (screen and motherboard) it would connect to open networks like McDonald's. But it wouldn't see the neighbor's connection unless I was in the house with him. I left it alone for a few months, then when I revisited it, it saw his network, but wouldn't connect, and wouldn't connect to open networks either.

Your welcome, It sounds like its some sort of communication error between his equipment and yours to me though. It really could be a driver issue also like turklyfe has said. Reinstall that driver if you know how to and see what happens. Any error messages you see also post them. This problem is on a desktop you said? or another laptop? Sorry Im tired lol

It's a laptop. Dell N5110. Had the motherboard and screen replaced and hasn't worked since then. Will post troubleshooting msg as soon as disk check is done if it doesn't work.

just to let you have an idea my hard drive is failing or something after a power outage while my computer was on....it would go through start up repair every time i turned it back on in the morning after shutting it down for the night i did check disk and it took 3-4 hours but now no more start up repair in the mornings

You said it's a new Dell laptop right, so it should be under warranty. Call them and get the internet card replaced. They will make you run a PSA test so you can just run it right and record any error that you may get. Let me know if they give you any kind of run around. Used to work at Dell for 4 years so I know a few way around/loopholes .
