I generally create sites using self-hosted CMS, but if you have some coding experience and want to collabo on a simple sharing site. Sorta like reddit, but not really.

    Primary features being:
    - user profile.
    - post site-theme-specific content.
    - ability to upvote.
    - ability to comment.

edit: For clarification, the only real reddit similarity is the prioritization of upvoted user content on the homepage. I can create this, but I'm trying to minimize an "off the shelf" approach.

I'm not bullshitting you, you'd have to pay me at least $300k/year to make a reddit-style site, and that's giving you an mturk discount. It would also be 12 months before we could even launch. This wouldn't be a small undertaking. There's a reason that reddit has become a huge company. Also, we'd probably fail within the first year.

I'm pretty sure the reddit API and code is open source, if you want to find somebody else to give it a shot.

I wouldn't even want to compete in this space to be deadly serious. I get that he just wants the upvote functionality and all, but development any kind of social platform these days just sounds like tossing money down the drain.

But don't go by me. That's just my opinion. I'm in a whole different lane.

As I clarified, the intent isn't to create another reddit, or on that scale.
What I was looking at was more along the lines of me creating the site myself, and having someone make some of the features function in specific ways.

Also, the intent isn't to hire someone to create a site for me for a fee. It is more to have a few people pool skills and time into an idea. If it scales into something, cool. If it doesn't, cool.

80% of all businesses fail within the first 18 months, but I don't think that should be the first thing on one's mind when thinking up anything.

Yes, the Reddit API is open source, and there are working plugin and widgetized versions of it for sale.
However, as I said, the idea shares nothing with reddit other than the prioritization of upvoted content. It is not a "social network" setting.

But never mind though, It's all good.

Did you people finally let him have TOTM so he'd shut up? Or I know, you're hoping the TOTM curse starts back up with him and he vanishes?
