A lot of stuff on that page confuses me but I can't find a way to read the sentence next to the check box as anything other than an opt in.
That confused me too, but I think it was that I opted out when I first saw their floating notification about the new ToS over the Gmail page a month ago. From what I'm reading with peoples' reactions on Tumblr and in comments on news articles, there are people who haven't opted out in any other way and that box would still be checked for them.
Cool Reddit copypasta, but the reality is that penny HITs can yield MUCH more than $4.37/hour. The logic: Take SET Masters. You can literally do 15 a minute, with a 5 second delay between batches of 10 (cuts it to maybe 12-13/minute). $7+/hour, easy. Brittany Grahams tend to pay, at the very top end, $0.08/minute for her penny HITs. Realistically, closer to $0.06/minute. I've done work for crap pay, but $3.60/hour, when 15% of that (~$0.50) is going to SS/Medicare tax.. no thanks.
For me, it's an iterative process. I'm probably going to install Firefox alongside Chrome, so that one of them can do data entry when TO is sluggish. Tjololo convinced me that I ought to revisit some of my computer security practices. And backups .. always backups. I plan to do a lot of Turking next year. But this year, I am tempted to keep self-employment income below $400, for reasons I guess I ought not to discuss on a Tuesday morning.
