edit: holy shit, sorry text. I'm really appreciative of everyone that posts here, whether it's work, personal, general, or entertainment related. Helps keep me focused on turking without making it miserable and builds a sense of community. That's what makes me disappointed with the whole masters stuff. On a scale of 1-7, with 1 being unhappy and 7 being happy, I'm a 4-7 on people getting the qual. Cool. I got masters in 2011 and was iffy about it then. I obviously wouldn't complain because it offered additional work, but the whole "program" ranges from blatant money making for Amazon (do they still get 20% instead of 10% of the cut or whatever?) to a poorly implemented stopgap measure of some sort of attempted quality assurance in this wild west marketplace. We all know where to place our opinion on a slider scale. So when I see people getting masters with half the HITs I completed this month it's disappointing. Not for me personally, I'm not really worried that it means less work for me or anything. Maybe a little bit, but it's probably minor and something that could be easily made up for. But overall because it devalues the "program" and any intended purpose it was supposed to have. Basically, if Amazon wanted the masters program to actually be something of benefit to mturk, to workers and requesters, to help ensure we have this source of income for as long as possible, I think they failed. And if the latest round of reports are mostly true, this proves it. To get back to the start of my rambling, it's just disappointing to see people who have been working so long at this get passed over. I obviously haven't viewed the quality of their work but I'd bet my lifetime mturk earnings that based on their stats, comments, and contributions that some of them would be more deserving than me of my masters qual, and probably most of them more deserving than a portion of those who do have the masters qual. And I see the viewpoint that some don't care or ignore the qual and just keep turking and making money. After all, as many will say, a private qual can easily mean more than masters. Or being at the right place at the right time. Keep working. Or as you all here say, Always Be Turking. I admire that attitude. But I don't see the non-salty attitude. People who need money are being filtered out due to Amazon's bullshit. Yeah, we know it's a lottery, or if you subscribe to another theory it's based on some specific work or combination of work, or whatever...but the lottery/luck/factor(s) is bullshit, and people being directly harmed due to that bullshit have their right to whatever emotion they deem fit. I don't want scammers on mturk. I don't want requesters being driven off because of poor work quality. I want everyone doing legitimate work here to have a legitimate shot at doing the work. I don't think Masters changes any of this for the better but it certainly prevents people from legitimate work. Apologies for the rambling. I don't mean to offend anyone. Not sure if my thoughts really make sense, and re-reading this I still didn't remotely articulate the thoughts and feelings I meant to. Basically, I dislike the program even though I was one of the earliest people to benefit from it, and I wish it had never been implemented. bottom edit: And I know I'm new and don't have much room to comment, but people that rarely post or lurk or are new to turking posting about masters is cool, but it's a sensitive subject. If the mindset is Masters = more money then wouldn't Amazon be better off giving Masters to people who make little money. I mean the whole rich get richer thing you know.

I think the thing is that regardless of whether masters is 'earned' or not, emotions don't have to be logical. It feels like being passed over for a promotion each time. And I have never been anything but courteous to new masters. Last time I stopped dramam before it happened on the FB page. Being upset that *I* didn't get it is not the same as resenting those who did.
I think it's more that Masters = more money possibilities and not necessarily more money per ## or anything. There's a good mix of money between requesters with no quals, location quals (US), private quals, basic quals (95-99%, 1000-10000 completed, etc.), and masters. But the combination of Amazon's policy to automatically assign masters to the HITs new requesters post (unless they know what they're doing and how to remove it), along with the numerical addition of workers, really makes it seem like it's all about extra profit for them, getting a 20% cut per HIT instead of a 10% cut without masters, or whatever the numbers used to be. So the more masters they have completing HITs that are automatically assigned to masters (edit: the poor paying ones that aren't completed in a timely fashion, that is), the more money they get while claiming that the work will be higher quality because of the masters they (seemingly) randomly assign. I might be wrong about how masters is presented to requesters but that's the general impression I got about how things operate.
I guess those requesters who require Masters demanded more diversity in the workers? Or they want newer people doing it other than "professional" Turkers? Or it is a money grab by Amazon

There are really shitty hits with the Masters qualification. I think Amazon is trying to get them done.
My understanding (I took a long hiatus from turking) was that the Masters qual is automatically set as a default unless they remove it? So depending on how it's handed out some could use it for diversity or whatever, but otherwise it's just there automatically, with no specific intention from the requester to use the qual(s).
It is set as the default when creating new HITs as a requester. The option is hidden unless you open Advanced Options and select that you do not want only Masters workers to be able to work on your work. Or something to that effect, it's been a while since I posted HITs.

That's exactly how it is set up. Some of the hit types don't even have advanced options and if you use that template, you HAVE to use a masters qual.
It's far more nefarious than that. If the requester uses an Amazon supplied HIT template, there's no way to remove the Masters option.
